Enjoy!

Ambient Chamber music dominates top airplay at Echoes in June.
We've been tracking ambient chamber music since the beginning of Echoes when it was mostly Tim Story, David Darling and Kevin Keller, but the subgenre has exploded, in an ambient chamber music way, that is, gently and without many people noticing, partly because it falls in between genres from the ambient chamber world music of Biomusique and Jami Sieber to the Euro-minimalist classical of Ludovico Einaudi and Ronn McFarlane to the folk chamber music of William Ackerman and Gerry O'Beirne. Nine of the Top 10 albums fall into the category and 14 of the Top 25. When I hear 20-somthing bands like Balmorhea citing 50-something composers like Ludovico Einaudi or the venerable Arvo Part, that tells me that something is happening. This is another ebb and flow in the evolution of Echoes which has seen influxes of Celtic, space music, electronica and world fusion over the years. There's still plenty of electronica, world fusion and unclassifiable music that makes up the Echoes soundscape. Here's the Top 25 with a few links to reviews.

Aleph-1 is an alias of Carsten Nicolai, also known as Alva Noto, who runs the Raster-Noton label wit

Aleph-1 is an alias of Carsten Nicolai, also known as Alva Noto, who runs the Raster-Noton label with Frank Bretschneider and Olaf Bender. Since I just put it orders for several new Raster-Noton albums I figured now would be a good time to take a look at this self-titled album, which was released right at the end of last year, at least a month before every Internet user had completed his or her "best of 2007" list. Naturally the album got lost in the end-of-the-year frenzy, and being released on the relatively obscure label iDEAL Recordings probably didn't help either. I have to say their catalog is very impressive and filled with big names in experimental music, though. Certainly a label deserving of more recognition.

In mathematics, the aleph numbers are used to denote the cardinality of infinite sets. I cannot say exactly how this relates to the music of Aleph-1, but the description of the album on the website talks about how Nicolai is working with multiple layers of infinitely repeating sounds without beginnings or ends. Yes, it sound very minimal — in fact, I call the aesthetic "ultraminimal" — just what we expect from the operator of the Raster-Noton label.

Since repetition seems very similar to replication to me, coupled with the similar graphic design on the Digipak, when I first heard of the album I thought it might be the second part in the Xerrox series. It's not, and it in fact takes sound in a completely different direction than anything I've heard from Alva Noto so far. It is certainly minimal — the tracks seem to be constructed out of many short loops of different lengths, then allowed to play simultaneously and match up (or not) however they will. There isn't a lot of development in the music, but I think that's sort of the point; the sounds present at the beginning of each song are the same as the sounds present at the middle and the end of each song. It's very different than both the clicks and cuts of Transform and the noisy droning ambiance of Xerrox, both of which have clear progressions between the start and end of each track.

The sounds used mark a departure from Nicolai's usual style as well. They're not really harsh or noisy or droning or high-pitched, in fact they're actually pretty gentle. Of course they are still very computer-generated, but they sound more like the sounds of Frank Bretschneider's Rand, for instance, than anything released under the Alva Noto name in the past. Clean and clear sinusoidal sounds. They're tonal, even melodic. The percussive sounds, the pops and clicks we've come to expect from Carsten Nicolai, are more subdued as well, like they've all been passed through a lowpass filter.

Don't let my comparison to Frank Bretschneider and use of the word repetition get you thinking techno, though. Perhaps this is a distant cousin of techno, because it's not that hard to really hear a "groove", but the sounds don't really line up very well a lot of the time. I would say it's closer to ambient music, actually, since the constant palette of gentle, repeating sounds has a rather hypnotic effect. It's strange, interesting, and I'd say very successful.

I've heard a few albums that seem so cheesy that you really shouldn't be listening to them, but for some reason you're continually drawn to them. The one that sticks out in my head the most is Manual and Icebreaker International's Into Forever. Music so sweet that it's like candy, you know it's bad for you, but it's still so irresistible. I don't feel that Hammock's Raising Your Voice...Trying to Stop an Echo, released by Darla in 2006, reaches quite that level, but it gives me a similar feeling, and it's still just really, really sweet, drenched in reverb and filled with melancholic melodies.

I think the easiest way to describe Hammock's sound is as a combination of Explosions in the Sky, Slowdive, and maybe the more recent Stars of the Lid material. It's definitely ambient music in most places, but it takes a lot of cues from both shoegaze and post-rock. It's a rather lengthy album at more than 75 minutes, and over the course of its 18 tracks it covers a lot of ground and never really loses any steam.

The album starts out with an absolutely beautiful piece that sounds like something right out of Sigur Rós's Ágætis byrjun, with strings and acoustic guitars and dreamy vocals and tons of reverb. Sure, we've heard it all before, but it really is a stunning way to open the album, and is still capable of almost bringing tears to my eyes. They follow it up with one of the more "indie rock" tracks of the album, with male vocals that I'd probably actually be able to comprehend if I tried. It actually has vocals and drums on it, and it's not a bad song. Most of the rest of the album is instrumental with occasional bits of slower, ethereal female vocals that may or may not actually be saying works, save for one more relatively "uptempo" track with male vocals in the second half. The third track, "Losing You to You", sounds like a more relaxed moment in an Explosions in the Sky album, and yes, like Explosions in the Sky, the progressions Hammock uses on this album are a little predictable, but still enjoyable. On "When the Sky Pours Down Like a Fountain" they try their hand at pure beatless ambient music, and it turns out a little over-the-top but good nonetheless.

One of my favorites is "Take a Drink From My Hands", which comes in right at the middle of the album and is one of the calmer pieces on this somewhat overly dramatic album. Sure, it still plays with themes that movie soundtracks have been using since forever, but the use of simple piano lines backed with slowly crescendoing strings here is excellent. So yes, the album is overly sweet, maybe even so sweet that you might start to feel a bit ill. And it's predictable and not very original, we've been hearing most of these sounds in popular music for a long time now. And perhaps it's a bit emotionally manipulative, making use of cheesy cues that films have conditioned us to associate with certain feelings. But it's OK to have a little candy once in a while, and I like it.

I never thought of myself as the sort to wear earplugs. I am the sentry of our home… I am the one who is always on alert, ears cocked for the slightest sound because the boys are pretty oblivious for the most part…

A couple of months ago we started using a dawning alarm clock (a BioBrite one) and the seller sent me a pack of ear plugs with the clock.
Because we have frequent and sudden foul weather here (and multiple tornadoes in the past couple of weeks) I would only wear one ear plug- in the ear facing “up” (I am a side sleeper) so I could drown out hubby’s snoring and obnoxiously loud breathing and maybe grab some zzzzz’s without being woken up by his nightly cocophany. That worked well as I could still hear enough with the unplugged, yet dampened by my pillow, ear so I could hear boyo through the baby monitor. But then I’d flip over and the breathing/snoring/senile moaning would have me wide awake again…

So I did some research and found The Earplug Superstore. Oh yes. Thank you oh wonderous world wide web!

While they do have excellent descriptions of all of their plugs I figured I’d try a sampling of foam plugs, like the freebies I got with that clock… So I ordered their “softest and smallest” sampler… A huge selection of fascinating colors and earplug marketing strategies… I’m not kidding. I have a pair of NASCAR “sparkplug” earplugs and another pair of Camo Plugs! Craziness!

Anyway, I also decided to try a higher end pair of earplugs…. I ordered the “SleepSoft” plugs made by Alpine. They promise a dampening of ambient noise but still allow one to hear the doorbell and children calling… They have open “ducts” to prevent “pressure” differences and they keep one from feeling cutoff.
Well, they arrived and are a miracle. It was mid afternoon when the package arrived and the grass was being chopped outside…. I went into boy’s room where he was playing music and I put in the plugs and had him speak to me… I could hear him clearly (but slightly dampened/quieter) but I could no longer hear the lawnmower or clothes dryer.
If these weren’t so durable I would have ordered the 6 pack! They are very comfortable and come with a little stick/applicator thingy as they are so flexible that you won’t get a great fit just using your fingers. They do come in a handy slider pack/container for safe and clean storage…
As far as using earplugs for ADD/ADHD, I am planning on using my giant sampler pack on the weekends when hubby is typically in charge of boy while I rush to get everything done and in some sort of order. I am so easily distractible by the slightest sound. One of my ADHD/ADD books recommended using noise cancelling ear phones but ear phones are out in our home as boyo would obsess and freak out if he didn’t get to use them and there goes any peace and quiet… So for now, for a couple of hours on Saturday morning, I will be escaping to my quiet little place to focus and maybe finish something for a change. Obviously, I would not wear earplugs while home alone with the kiddo…No way. Too risky, even if I can still hear him a little bit…Also that would be insanely rude and I try not to roll that way…
Anyway, I’m testing my “portable isolation booth” (ha ha) tomorrow morning…. Hopefully, this will increase my productivity and focus in general, so that I can finish the things that require intense focus, and have more time to spend with the boys…
I’ll update soon…

I'm old enough to remember Erich Von Daniken and his potty theories about how earth's civilizations were brought about through alien contact. There was quite a hoo-ha about it all when I was a kid, and his books flew off the shelves. I've just glanced at Wikipedia and was surprised to learn that he's still with us, and only the same age as Leonard Cohen! Bizarre. Panspermia is the hypothesis that the seeds of life exist all over the universe, and that life on earth is nothing unique, nor even originally from here. Nice theory, but it hasn't a whiff of evidence to support it (nor to discount it – it's one of those hypotheses which are simply acts of faith). Exogenesis is something else entirely – the theory that life originated elsewhere and came to earth during the asteroid bombardment of the Pre-Cambrian era, before the planet had an adequate atmospheric shield. Anyway I digress. The reason I brought the topic up at all was that the panspermia theory is the inspiration behind Alien Genome Project, a self-released album by Craig Murphy (whose band Shoosh are featured on the Phantom Channel compilation) under the moniker ch.pm.

The album consists of drones, cosmic synth chords, and disembodied, distorted vocal samples. It has echoes of Kosmische Musik acts like (early) Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schultze as well as their spiritual descendants such as Pete Namlook. But there are equally nods to Stars of the Lid, Eno's Apollo and Murcof's Cosmos projects. The eight tracks unfold slowly. Some are short and fragile; others, like the title track, have a suitably cosmic grandeur. “Hybrid”, the closing section, has a slowed down echoing voice that has the rhythm of whale song, and sounds like the last, fading sounds of a dying civilization. It's quite a spooky end to a seriously trippy suite of music. Only it isn't quite the end. There is also a bonus 36 minute mix of the album entitled “Alien Genome Project (Full Blown)”. The album is available from Musiczeit at the address below.

Or Give Me Death! pelo selo independente And the Sound Records.

CD Text -

The middle path is an attempt to bridge the gap between two different ages, the classical and the digital age. All three compositions are based around the pure Indian classical ragas that are blended with groovy melodious digital atmospheres. The ragas used were carefully chosen keeping the three basic times of an average human’s day – Morning, Afternoon & Evening, thus maintaining a comfortable relaxed environment to listen to the genre of music we have come to call ‘Electro-classical’.

Review -

‘Saatvik Sequencers’ is a conceptual music project by Nikhel Kumar Mahajan and Hari Singh. Both the artists have a vivid background in electronic music. Nikhel has released 2 critically acclaimed albums under his alternate avatars of Sattyananda (Ambient) & Kalyug (Progressive) and has performed at festivals all around the globe while Hari has a sound engineer degree from SAE Chennai & a diploma degree in music production from Manchester Midi School in the UK. He has also played an active role in the Manchester club scene as a sound engineer & organiser. He is going to release his solo debut album on Audio Ashram in 2008. Both the artists have had the honour to work with top classical artists like Amaan & Ayaan Ali Khan, Anoushka Shankar, Subha Mudgal & Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

‘The Middle Path’ is synthesized to be an evolving journey that uplifts the listener in every way possible. All sounds are comfortable, relaxed & groovy with a sense of shamanic mysticism. The album maintains the uncompromising production quality listeners have come to expect from the duo’s other projects.

Each of the three18 minutes compositions are built on a solid framework of intricate Indian classical music ragas blended with layers of electronic atmosphere drifts that induce dreamy nonchalance.
Raga Aheerbharavi symbolizes the morning cycle of a human’s day. It focuses on the flute by Pundit Ajay Prasanna which is introduced by an array of pads that rise out of the darkness to announce the incoming beat. The sounds are accentuated by soothing vocals and hazy atmospheres that are interspaced with precise mechanical percussions.

The second track Raga Bhimpalasi symbolizes the afternoon cycle & focuses on mesmerizing vocals by Pundit Bholenath Mishra. It starts off with a thick blend of chants & ethereal synths. The digital mix of groovy break-beats and glitchy overtones overlay the organic flute & sarod, teleports our conscious minds to realms of uncompromised quality and cutting edge electro-classical music.

Raga Durga, symbolizes the last cycle of the day, the evening cycle and focuses on the Indian instrument Sarod, played skillfully by Pundit Mukesh Sharma. The track can be best described as an epic. The build up from cinematic ambient bliss to up tempo ethno-chill is impeccable and would best suit a festival audience.

The artwork for the album is warm and pleasant with different shades of orange as a background for digital wire frames. Exploring the CD inlay we find thoughtful quotes such as “We are what we think. All that we are arises with out thoughts. With our thoughts we make our world – Buddhist Quote” which explores the artists thought process and the parallel musical dimension they create & “Just as the highest and lowest notes are equally inaudible. So perhaps is the greatest sense and the greatest nonsense equally unintelligible – Allan Watts” that symbolizes the path between different genres the artists have chosen for painting this sonic canvass.

The Middle Path is a mature and innovative album that has been released by India’s latest Independent Music Label/ Production House ‘Audio Ashram’ which is an initiative by Nikhel, Bawa & Joey Matthew to promote the crème of electronic musicians across different music genres and help the electronic music culture in India morph into a truly global phenomenon. Audio Ashram is also donating a percentage of all the album sales to ‘Cankids Kidscan’ a family support group for children with cancer and their families (http://www.cankidsindia.org/).

Download a live set recorded at Glastonbury. It's from the mid nineties,i can't be more specific than that, recorded and broadcast by Radio 1,recorded to cassette and transferred/tape hiss removed with Goldwave.I think theres even a snippet of the late great John Peel at the end,as he used to handle much of Radio 1's Glastonbury coverage in those days.
I have seen The Orb maybe 6 or 7 times, each time they have been superb.I first saw them supporting Gary Clail's On-U Soundsystem back in 1991,the last time was last year at The Wickerman Festival, where despite splitting their set for the burning of The Wickerman itself, still managed to pull off a superb performance, still worth seeing,do it if you ever get the chance.

So far I’ve only written reviews of recent acquisitions of mine, stuff I’ve gotten in th

So far I've only written reviews of recent acquisitions of mine, stuff I've gotten in the past few weeks. I've now worked through my backlog and I don't have anything new to write about, but I'd like to continue posting new content daily, so I think I'm going to be occasionally looking back into my collection for material. Since yesterday my mention of Shuttle 358's Chessa prompted a couple Internet searchers to come across my site, I figured it would be a nice place to start.

Shuttle 358 is Dan Abrams, and he's put out releases on Mille Plateaux and Plop, but he's always been best known as a member of the 12k roster, starting with Optimal.lp, which I must admit I haven't heard (hey, it's super-rare, and whenever it shows up on eBay it goes for way too much), and following that up with the classic Frame. They (they being some press release or review I read once) say he is responsible for bringing the warm and organic into the then-cold world of glitch music at the end of the last millennium. He also produced an album under his own name and another Shuttle 358 album called Understanding Wildlife for Mille Plateaux.

Those who have heard Abrams' earlier works should have some idea what to expect from Chessa. It follows very much in the same vein as Frame and Understanding Wildlife — they are both ambient music, obviously, and they both make use of the usual glitchy techniques. But despite all the praise Frame got for bringing life back into glitch music, on Chessa Abrams takes it even further. In fact, Chessa can almost make parts of those older albums sound like the sterile ultraminimalism of artists like Ryoji Ikeda and Philus. And it's not just that Chessa has a more "grainy" sound when compared to the "clicky" sound of the previous albums, you can even start to hear instruments like guitar and drums in tracks like "Scrapbook". Maybe Abrams was influenced by the work of other 12k artists like Taylor Deupree and Sawako, whose albums Northern and Hum have a similar sound and were released just around the same time (well, within a span of two years, at least...) — or perhaps it is more likely that the sound of Chessa influenced those other artists.

For me, the highlight of the album comes on the track "Melt". It features a bell-like part repeating a four-note pattern throughout its five-plus minutes, over some really wonderful synth washes in the background. There is a part that sort of sounds like a clarinet or an oboe — some sort of reedy woodwind instrument — playing long, sustained notes, and it will occasionally play a quick, downward scale or arpeggio, that makes me feel like I'm sort of, well, melting. Maybe it's just the name of the track influencing my perception, but a similar thing happens on "Spiff" from Frame. I've actually had the same sort of feeling with one more 12k release, Pjusk's Sart, which was just released last year, on the first track. It always seems to happen with notes playing a downward pattern that is somewhat isolated from the rest of the music. Whatever it is, Shuttle 358 pulls it off beautifully.

Two years ago The Silent Ballet magazine and the Lost Children Net Label joined forces with the goal of providing a quarterly compilation that operated outside the boundaries of genre stereotypes, consistently promoted new and emerging artists, and released exclusive tracks into the public. Nine compilations later, we’d like to think that this venture has been a success; over one hundred artists have graciously lent a track to a compilation, the series has been downloaded over 70,000 times, and we’ve received great feedback from readers and musicians alike about discovering a new favorite band thanks to the series.

The future looks just as bright as ever. We’re currently planning the tenth volume of the series and we do hear the demands to make these compilations available in physical form. While on one hand we do enjoy the fact that the series is 100% free and does no harm to the environment, we are currently exploring a few projects that may result in a physical CD being created at some point in the future. If there’s one thing you can count on us for, it’s being spontaneous.

As always, a big thanks goes out to all the artists and labels who made this project possible. Relevant links can be found below where your support for their music can be demonstrated. Until next time...

After several compilations romping through various related fields, Volume VIII returns to what this compilation series began with in Volume I, bringing the post-rock hits. The current edition brings together tracks from some current albums we’re enjoying at the TSB headquarters and ones that should be making some huge waves come the fall. It’s a compilation we’re proud of and are confident our readers will find enjoyable.

We graciously thank all artists and labels who made this compilation possible. Hopefully all who find this venture worthwhile will look into supporting these artists in whichever way possible. It is our support which enables them to continue creating music that they, and we, love.
