It was last December and I was checking in at the Roanoke Airport.  I was looking forward to a little jaunt to Las Vegas and I was excited because I was planning to absorb a little atmosphere for a novel I was thinking of writing.

As you will see if you go to my other site Am I Sam?, one of my writing quirks is that I like to place myself in a position of mixing fact with fiction and make myself the subject of dark and self-deprecating humor. I had an idea of writing a book about a character named Sam Krisch and his encounter with his double Sam KIRSCH, a spelling and pronunciation of my last name I have encountered my entire life.  I had in mind an entertaining book in the vein of Philip Roth's Operation Shylock, Jose Saramago's The Double, or Chuck Paliniuk's Fight Club, all of which are entertaining, provocative narratives that play with identity and create humor or horror with the confusion and interplay between the "real" person and his "double."  

I took my bag to TSA inspection.  The agent placed the bag on the inspection station and looked at it. He paused and checked a list on a clipboard.  He looked at the bag again.  He put a pair of rubber gloves on and said to me:  "Sir, is there anything sharp in the bag? I'm going to have to inspect it."  I shook my head and said no, and I wasn't worried because I had nothing to hide. He took his time and unzipped the bag and called over another agent. They very gingerly took everything out of my bag and carefully examined the contents. They then took their Stridex pads and wiped them on every seam, every zipper, and both of them nervously placed their hands in each of the exterior pockets. The machine showed no evidence of any problem with the bag.

They gave me a second look and said: "Okay. You can go now."

I smiled and walked to security to get on the plane.  What was all that about?

Two days before the encounter at the airport, I had seen a report on television about John Darwin, a man who had disappeared five years before and turned up with great fanfare, claiming that he had been separated from his family because of amnesia.

The report said an investigation by police had shown that Mr. Darwin faked his own death and then went into hiding for five years.  His wife had collected on his life insurance policies and had moved to Panama. The couple ultimately received sentences of 6 1/2 years and both cases are currently under appeal. The reporter talked about a crime called "identicide" in which people simply disappear, assume new identities, and live without detection.  Often, loved ones are in collusion and collect on insurance policies. People change identities to escape prosecution, bill collectors, or live a new life with someone other than their spouse.  The reporter mentioned several books about how to assume a second identity.  I will not mention the titles, but feel free to Google them, if the rest of this paragraph doesn't faze you.  I had ordered the books through Amazon and upon my return I read in one of the books that one of the reasons to keep either a second identity or to simply to leave the old one behind was because of increased surveillance by the government under the Patriot Act.

Could my order through Amazon have placed me on a watch list?

When word came earlier this year about Steve Fossett's disappearance, my mind started to wander. This was a man who had traveled the world in a hot air balloon and suddenly went missing without a trace.  A massive search had revealed nothing.  I couldn't believe that an experienced pilot would simply vanish into thin air.  Perhaps he had some crime to conceal.  Perhaps he had a second family sequestered under an assumed name.  There were mistresses and there was a fortune.  Mr. Fossett was a wily trader; perhaps there are laundered offshore accounts.

I fantasized about him flying VFR under radar to the sea.  He had survived several water landings during his attempts to fly around the world. He could have flown to a specific coordinate, ditched his plane in the water, met a waiting boat, and reemerged with a new identity elsewhere.

Recently, Mr. Fossett's identification, enclosed in plastic, and a wad of $100 bills were found off trail by a day hiker.  The plane's wreckage was found at another location nearby. There were some remains found. Case closed?

Times Online contains a recent story: "Facts ruin otherwise good Steve Fossett conspiracy theories". The article points out the holes in theories like mine, but the article ends with the thought that at the time of publication, the remains have not been positively identified.  Maybe reports of Steve Fossett's death are greatly exaggerated.

Now I am off to Argentina to learn about a foreign culture, a foreign language, and the Tango.  I am performing a disappearing act of my own, except I am traveling under my own passport.  I am doing that other thing, the escape that almost everyone thinks about in midlife.

My friends are enthusiastic about my trip and they say I will come back a changed man.

Will I meet my double while abroad? Will he assume my identity and travel back using my passport? Has he already assumed my identity and is going in my place?  Is the "I" who is writing this actually Sam Krisch, or is it a different writer using a pseudonym?  We will find out.

Did Barack Obama use former Weathermen leader, William Ayers, the unrepentant domestic terrorist to pen his memoir, "Dreams from My Father"? Jack Cashill of the American Thinker postulates the idea, and his evidence is compelling. He compares the writing styles of Mr. Ayres' book "Fugitive Days" to the Democratic Presidential Nominee's book and remarks on how life experience influenced writing as well as direct sentence comparison.

I am not as convinced. However I am certain that the Ayers/Obama relationship goes much further that either of them admit to and that there is a reason why Obama is not more forthcoming. If my neighbor had the same background as Mr. Ayers, I would certainly like to understand exactly where the man stands before I associate myself with him, not to mention serving on several boards with him.

The relationship itself does not influence my opinion of Barrack Obama. As many other have stated before it is his unwillingness to discuss this troublesome relationship with the American voters.

As soon as I started peeking behind the scenes of modeling and fashion as a magazine editor, I knew that I wanted to put a "real girl" in the middle of this crazy world, a girl who would see it from the outside and be like, "Holy crap!" It's an insane environment, so there's lots of fodder for adventure, humor and drama, especially from the point of view of a small town girl who's not yet jaded.

Yes! Read, read, read. It's amazing how much you learn about plot, characterization, structure, pacing, etc just by reading a ton of books. Think about which ones you love, and why. Also, the key to publishing a book is FINISHING it. A lot of writers who want to be published start books and then put them in a drawer. Trust me: Finishing is half the battle!

    "Every moment of a science fiction story must represent the triumph of writing over worldbuilding.
    Worldbuilding is dull. Worldbuilding literalises the urge to invent. Worldbuilding gives an unneccessary permission for acts of writing (indeed, for acts of reading). Worldbuilding numbs the reader’s ability to fulfil their part of the bargain, because it believes that it has to do everything around here if anything is going to get done.

    Above all, worldbuilding is not technically neccessary. It is the great clomping foot of nerdism. It is the attempt to exhaustively survey a place that isn’t there. A good writer would never try to do that, even with a place that is there. It isn’t possible, & if it was the results wouldn’t be readable: they would constitute not a book but the biggest library ever built, a hallowed place of dedication & lifelong study. This gives us a clue to the psychological type of the worldbuilder & the worldbuilder’s victim, & makes us very afraid."

    I read this earlier today, and had to share it with you. A keen observation, this is. Look at what he says closely. As a reader, it is our job (nay, our pleasure) to fill in some of the blanks. As writers it is our duty to allow all others the freedom to do so.
    We musn't tell them everything. Some things, certainly, but not everything. I mean this as no excuse for poor detail or fractured narrative. What I mean is this; know it, inside and out, every detail: The peoples, long since faded from memory that once thrived where your hero now treads; animals that will never wander in your protagonist's path and ruins that are too covered with centuries of stories to be seen. Every rock, village, tide and turn. This is the foundation upon which worlds are built. These are the underpinings of much greater things. Like steel beams in a modern building, it holds...it structures the fabric of your imagination.
    Because after all, it is the utterance of a thing that makes it what it is. As an author, you will always (without fail) know more about your worlds than can be shared with your readers. Your acknowledgement of it is enough. If it is strong, it will carry through your prose and filter into the minds of those who dare dive deep enough. Those are the worlds that leave us dreaming long after the last page has been turned. Like the never ending story, some worlds will never die.

Society has a sadistic bent, a lust to see others in turmoil, from the distant, lion-tearing days of the Colosseum to the present preliminary judging on American Idol, where wannabe singers have their dreams crushed with slashes to the jugular in front of millions of viewers.

    Exploit that. If you work in any kind of marketing, you use what hooks. In fiction, the ultimate carrot, that glorious pot of gold, is conflict. Although we usually don’t like to be in the midst of anything bad or ugly ourselves, we do like to read about characters who are and aim to worm their way out of it.

    Lack of action and struggle is boring. Yes, a work may be the perfect archetype of great literature if it exposes fascinating characters with beautiful language, but without the family feud that led to tragedy in Romeo and Juliet, the love story would have been forgettable and not worth the ink. The Oddysey would have been akin to I'll Be Home For Christmas with Jonathan Taylor Thomas rather than the epic it was if the journey home had taken ten kinda bumpy hours versus ten years of struggle.

    In addition to good conflict, you also need a character who tries and keeps trying. No one wants to read about a victim who doesn’t strive to win. If yours curls up, hides and empties countless boxes of tissues and ice cream and doesn’t move, that wimp will drive your work into the toilet.

    I’ve taken turns in my stories that have made me shake, laugh, bellow and cry, even just today while I was writing. Don’t back down from that which seems uncomfortable, perilous, excruciating and impossible. If you throw emotion into the work, heighten the stakes, and build up the adversity, readers will be impacted and hooked.

    Conflict is the heart of any good story. And it’s best if it comes from all angles, inside and out. Don’t shy away nightmares, agony and pressure. If your neck starts to tingle and tears start to fall, that’s good. Readers love when characters are in so much trouble that there seems no way out. So heap it on, dig the hole deep and start burying, leaving him or her with only a drive for self-preservation and a teaspoon. If your conflict and turmoil feels impossible to overcome, that’s what will make your book a page turner, something that can’t be put down. If you want readers who read and keep coming back for more, close the deal. Bait and hook. Go for the throat. Kill the best friend. Kidnap the kid. Make your work riveting. You can do it.

    Film and video production is the process of creating a motion picture film. This process consists of the activities from the initial development to the final distribution stage. While the process differs from one production company to another, there are certain stages through which film and video production goes.

    Typically, there are the pre-production, production, and the post-production stages. Though the production stage is the occasion when the actual filming takes place, the other stages, particularly the pre-production stage, significantly influence the entire process of film and video production.

    The pre-production stage is concerned with the development and revising of the script. Budgeting and financing decisions are made at this stage. More time spent on planning and designing the process helps with keeping costs low during the entire course of the process. Scheduling, casting, and set construction are completed during this stage.

    The production stage is when the equipment needed for filming is set up and appropriate lighting and audio devices are put in place. This is the phase of principal photography, when the actual filming takes place with the director of the film overseeing the operations. This is arguably the most critical and expensive phase of the production stage. Generally, the start of the phase of principal photography signals that the production of the film would, in all probability, be completed.

    ]]>         <![CDATA[Financial Meltdown – “Snap Out of It!”]]> http://lindaedgecombe.wordpress.com/?p=101 Fri, 10 Oct 2008 18:38:49 +0000 lindaedgecombe http://lindaedgecombe.tr.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/financial-meltdown-%e2%80%93-%e2%80%9csnap-out-of-it%e2%80%9d/ The gastric juices in our stomachs start to heave towards our throats and we start breathing quicker; wondering if and how we are going to get by.  Anxiety levels are rising at a rate faster than the Dow Jones and TSX indicators are falling.  Take a pill people.  Seriously: Stop, Breath and Take a moment to do a quick assessment of what’s going on for you.  Now I am not a financial expert (although I do love money) but I am a life perspective expert and what I do know is that your body does not know the difference between an imagined stressor and the real thing.   Whether imagined or real, a stress response is created. This stress surges through your body just worrying about what might happen, even if it never does.  And most things never do!

     

    So let’s take an honest look at what’s going on.  Is there a financial crisis happening around the world? Yes there is.  Are you going to be affected by what’s happening in the markets? Well, if you are an average North American who has put money aside for the past 20+ years for your retirement, yes it’s going to have an effect.  If you planned on retiring next year, it will have a larger affect than if you have a few more to go to allow the markets to recover.  BUT freaking out and worrying yourself sick makes things worse not better. 

     

    If we look at the pace at which we all were spinning out of control, not taking care of the basics in all of our lives in the past decade or two, well it only seems to make sense that we all needed the proverbial slap in the face (like Cher gave Nicolas Cage in the movie Moonstruck) and said “Snap Out of It!”

     

    I saw Oprah speak in Seattle a few years back and she indicated that we all get little messages to try and wake us up, and when we don’t listen to the little messages they tend to come at us a bit stronger.  So when the tap on your shoulder goes unnoticed, perhaps a slap will come next, but when we also ignore the slap eventually we run into a brick wall.  So in retrospect, we have not only run into a brick wall, the wall is now falling on us and probably will for a little while longer.

     

    Here’s the thing, none of us are going anywhere.  We are all going to tie up our shoes and roll up our sleeves and move forward and for now, our wallets will be a bit lighter.  If we don’t learn from this world-altering event then we will have really missed the point.  So what can you do in the mean time to keep yourself healthier, stable and avoiding worrisome ulcers?  I know that there are some personal characteristics that some of us have that allow us to handle stressors better than others.  Consider this as you move forward through the next 12 months. 

     

    As we all know, handling stress improperly – or ignoring it all together – can lead to The Big “B,” or burnout. Naturally, burnout conjures up negative thoughts and emotions in most of us and especially in those of us who have experienced it.

     

    The image of burnout is negative, so in order for us to get out of the survival mode and take on more control, we need to change the messages we are sending to our brains. Everyone experiences stress everyday. Some of us lead extremely stressful lives, and experience stress as being not so bad. What are the skills required to be more stress resistant?

     

    Recent studies have found that people with high levels of stress but low levels of illness share three characteristics. They are called the three “C’s”:

     

    1.                             Control – a sense of purpose and direction in their life.

    2.                             Commitment – to work, hobbies, social life, or family.

    3.                             Challenge – seeing changes in life as normal and positive rather than as an irritant and a threat.

     

    Tips to keep you healthy during challenging times:

     

    Here’s what you can do literally to keep yourself and your families healthier this year. 

     

    1.      Move your body, get more oxygen in your blood system more often.  This one is so important and is non-negotiable.  You simply must get outside more and move!  Movement literally moves stress through your body more effectively than anything else.  And yes that means alcohol.  Most folks think that having a drink calms them down when it actually messes up their metabolism and lowers the quality of sleep we receive.

     

    2.     Laugh more.  Find your own funny faster and make it a mandate to hang out with people who see life the same way you do.  Do not stick your head in the sand and pretend this financial crisis is not happening, but don’t join the “Oh Wows Me, stitch and bitch in the coffee room, whine your way to alienation club.”  Take in a funny movie or better yet, rent one it’s cheaper. 

     

    3.     Enjoy more moments in your day.  Notice the fall colors if you have them in your area.  Be thankful for the things you do have in your life and if possible give back to someone who has less than yourself.  Nothing makes us feel better spiritually than giving to others, however that looks to you.

     

    4.     Do one or two things each week that are things you love to do.  Now you might want to see how you can do some of these joys in a less costly way, but this one is very doable. 

     

    5.     Be thankful for this current wake up call.  We all needed it and we all know that.  In truth it’s just one more step towards a better world and a better life for all of us.

    Ahoy, I am Jara Marku Palango, I am one of the guys who worked on India’s first vernacular board game. 

    I belong to an ancient sect called Gariyen of  Duhin an ancient religion from ancient land of Diain. We worship the great god Hama Nuvish and Milaksh. Though  Rajakumar the main guy behind India’s first vernacular game, and I are inversely inclined, nevertheless considered as an alter ego to one another and it became clear as I was also doing  research in the ancient language of mine Milta, and of course English. In the ancient land of Diain, the region where Milta is spoken the place was known either as  Nnaiche or as Rasmad and a lovely river called Vamko of wonderful fragrance of Sero, Delsan, Leemal and many was known to be flowing along the waters which also served as the drinking water, as milk and as food for the people.  This beautiful river flowed to every home and people drank directly from the river. It is also written that the beautiful Vamko will come  to the people, that is, no matter where they decide to have a home and the Angel Vamko will go there to the homes of people and was also known as river with life. It is also recorded that the waters or the milk of Vamko is the only food people took.

    It must have been some kind of super elixir and more and more I heard about it, these people were not like me and you but appeared very exotic, heavenly and angelic. How can I or my people ever claim to belong to such a religion or a group without having or anybody ever in my traceable ancestry ever having  displayed even an iota of any powers, what so ever, Gariyen sect of the great religion Duhin, had.  I wondered aloud as I was listening to an old man of knowledge, who is 92 years old and named GURUJI Jannumara. He smiled and nodded.

    Jannumara, whose knowledge and wisdom of Dasva and Shadnipau the timeless antiquity of ultimate wisdom, has been handed down to him, only from word of mouth said, “son, it is all in the mind and mind is in the time and time is ageless and if you have the mind you have the power. You are relating to time thinking from present, all creatures do, then you see only present and its limitations. It is the free will with which the recipient of knowledge magnifies it to extraordinary proportions or diminishes it to insignificant levels and then power comes magnified or diminished, all according to free will. Son you are a writer of fiction and poems, how many stories are with you now?”

    I said four. Guruji Jannumara smiled again and asked, “what are the topics about?”                                 

    I said the first is Virus R.I.C.H©.  It is an epic to change the humanity forever. It is about a new kind of deadly virus the humanity has to face, with every technology that is available, with every cure that is developable, with every huge huge funding that is expendable. But the cure? What will cure before humanity is completely wiped out. With the only available wildest of wildest cures coming from a philosophy student, and a nihilist group trying to prevent even trying out this remedy, which costs nothing, can humanity survive?   

    The second one is Genetic city©, which is nothing but a city like ours, a few years from now. Most likely our children or our children’s children will be the citizens of the Genetic City, living quite differently than us and quite happier than us till one day some one discovered the power of true love.

    The third is  Soul searching ©it is about the most amazing  discovery of oneself , that which questions everything we know, without any scope of answers but creating more and more questions till  one gives up. In the most absolute vain, the more you try to know who you are, the farther away you are from it.

     And the fourth is Terrorist code 238©. This code is guarded like a god. When the world has evolved absolutely powerful techniques conquering terror almost completely, a terrorist code 238 is quietly codified and doing wild rounds in the top echelons of security corridors. Uranium, plutonium, and other fissionable atomic bomb ingredients movements across the globe is monitored in unprecedented ways.  But yet ………

    This is all I told Guruji,  

    I just gave only a sketchy and tantalizing blurb of the four titles I am working on, the blurbs I wrote for our website, so as not to waste his time, but Guruji told me whatever I have written so far and whatever I am planning to write ahead and said that all the stories I have will change the world according to the free will of the people who are reading the books, so with my poetry composing and English grammar games.

    Jannumara’s aged watery eyes was somehow as deep as an ocean, his smile was so beatific that people around him will always be submerged in total peace and be absolutely  transcended of petty, worldly, influences.

    My eyes, filled tears on hearing Guruji Jannumara tell me the stories I have not told him and I instinctively prostrated before him and touched is frail feet. His frail hands touched my head in blessing as I got up, and here my wonderment of Gariyen people’s vanished angelic powers got answered.     

    Guruji Jannumara said,” go head son make your presence felt, somebody from English speaking land will publish your stories, it will do good, it will magnify your powers and then come”.   

    Another answer from the Guruji Jannumara without ever asking my question. I wanted to learn the great knowledge and wisdom of Dasva and Shadnipau the timeless and ultimate wisdom. I know I have to mature some more.
