Just read something disturbing: One in five employers does research on the web about potential emplo

Just read something disturbing: One in five employers does research on the web about potential employees. Yikes and double Yikes! This is scary, unsettling, and maybe even a little wrong--but that doesn't change anything. Big brother IS out there, only now he's not just the government, he's the corporation, or little mom and pop business that is looking to hire (or fire) someone.

Man, I knew from my current job that employers were googling their employees, and potential employees (one of my current colleagues told me that he did a little research on me to see if I was reliable). I smiled at my colleague, but it also weirded me out a little bit.

I have a myspace account, and a facebook account. I have friends who take pictures of me, sometimes in less than glamorous situations, and then post them to their accounts. I do not mind this; it is kind of what those accounts are for. However, I do not like the idea that an employer would look at my profile, or somehow see pictures of me and then decide to a: fire me, or b: not hire me.

In general I am a law abiding citizen (sure I jaywalk every now and again, or sample the random grape from the grocery store) but that doesn't mean that some of my antics/photos on the web are roses and bumblebees. Nor does it mean that I want to have to act like a saint all the time because someone might take my picture and put it on the web, where some future employer could find it, and then decide to fire me for it.

Get rid of your facebook account, then. I can hear people saying. And while that might solve some of the problem, it won't fix everything. My friends can still put pictures on their profiles, the only difference is they wold have a harder time tagging me. And I shouldn't have to get rid of my facebook or myspace accounts. I am a privater citizen and what I do in my free time (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else) is my business, not my boss's.

Right now, it's one in five, but I bet, unless some kind of legislation is enacted it will soon be close to 100%. I mean, why not. There could even be whole divisions of companies devoted surfing the net, looking into their employees' (or potential employees') activities, and deciding if someone should be fired because they're taking a shot off of a bare belly.

Sure, maybe we should think about the kinds of things we post on the net, but the net is there for us to share with other people. We shouldn't be punished for what we share, unless of course it is illegal. That is a completely different story.

And it is not just social sites like myspace and facebook that are used to check up on people. Blogs are used too. In fact, the Yahoo article claimed that people have been fired from their jobs for blogging. Now, if they were blogging on the job, that is one thing, but if they kept their work life separate from their blogging life, there is no reason for this. It's a free country, and people should be able to think (and write and say) what they want. This world just keeps getting stranger and stranger.

I did get curious, though, as to what kinds of things about myself I could find on the internet, and I ma happy to say I only found three hits. One of them was a response to a questionnaire about Free Comic Book Day in 2005, one was my current job, and the third was a statement I made to my college newspaper way back in 2002. I think all of these things are pretty innocuous and would not be cause for an employer to shun me, but I just don't know.

Just a quick post today:

Following on from my offhand comments yesterday about the rapidly developing merge between online and offline media (mainly television), the internet and the technology it brings is undoubtly a brilliant means to unite global news. Fine; we all know that, but it seems to me that with the ever-growing presence of the web in people's lives, the internet iteself is increasingly becoming a subject of news.

Just by Googling the term "internet news" yields 111m search results, and "news ABOUT the internet" gives me 170m. Ok, a lot of this will be indexed back to past issues - some results might not even be that relevant - but all the major players around the globe have either microsites or pages dedicated solely to developments within the online industry, and they seem to be getting bigger and better each day. Whilst obvious players include wide-ranges from BBC technology and the Guardian, through to CNN and the New York Times, it seems the internet (rather ironically) is promoting itself online through other portal news sources, such as the current Yahoo homepage (TWO features this morning: Mi6 recruiting through Facebook and the creation of a new internet watchdog) and MSN, through to the likes of specialist sites like NewsNow and Blinkx. Even blogs can provide reasonably up-to-date news.

The internet is using itself to shamelessly self-promote, and I love it even more for that very reason.

Google...Every odd person knew about the magical search exploration. It gives up the appropriate results which is solely depends upon the searching style or fashion. Like all self-obsessed bloggers, I keep a fairly careful eye on my blog stats.

Mood: awake

Currently listening to: Ampersand by Amanda Palmer

The other day I took the plunge and bought the domain name of my name. (I bought the name for this blog as well & am currently working on getting it linked up. Just going to take a few days to get someone to do it for me. My tech skills are questionable at best.)

Anyways, I bought my domain name because I'm thinking positively. Whether I end up using it to market my eventual "novel" or just for the work writing I do (& those freelance articles brewing in my head), I decided it was a good step to take. Also, I figured it was about time I make it mine as there is someone else out there with my name.

One day I was googling my name and came across an article in my college newspaper written by "me." At least the attribution line said it was written by me. While I did write a couple articles for my college paper, this was not one of them. I soon realized that not only was there someone else out there with my name--with the exact same spelling, but she also went to the same college I did (although a few years after me) & was a writer (well, at least for the college newspaper. I haven't come across anything else she's done since then). Luckily I was the first one to lay claim to "our" domain name. I hate sharing.

I went for first+last name. Easy enough. I thought about first initial+last name, but that was taken (by some silversmiths). I also gave some thought to using my middle initial as I did when I wrote in college, but decided that I wanted to keep it simple. True, if I ever get the site up & running, some people might mistake the two of us, but I'll take my chances.

So my name is mine. Now we'll just have to see what I make of it.

Image: metatron1050 via flickr

---------------------------------

What have you found while googling your name?

If I were Bristol Palin, I'd be googling myself (though it may not be the wisest thing, since there are people out there saying terrible things about her family).

I wanted to offer my thoughts on the whole situation (for those not familiar with "the situation," vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, is 5 months pregnant out of wedlock).I think Bristol's bravery to even get to the point of telling her parents that she was pregnant shows a lot of courage. I know what it's like to be in a family that is watched all the time; Bristol would have known the implications of admitting her pregnancy instead of secretly getting an abortion. She would have known that her mom would have to make a public statement and that people would all of the sudden want her picture and be crawling the internet for careless statements.

No, I don't condone sex out of wedlock or abortion. But why chew up and spit out a young couple who are trying to make their mistake right? I think Bristol is beautiful and has the kind of courage some could only dream of. More power to her.

All my life I have been plagued with a compulsion to know more. Television shows, movies, newspaper

All my life I have been plagued with a compulsion to know more. Television shows, movies, newspaper or magazine articles and books sent me running to the library to find more information on whatever, or whoever, struck my odd fancy.

I remember one blissful summer during university when I lived right across the street from the public library.

Right across the street!

The hours I whiled away in the non-fiction stacks, thumbing through tomes on subjects so trivial I might as well have been aspiring to a career on Jeopardy. But it was heavenly.

While I still love researching "by hand", I am more likely to google something today than not.

"Google it."

Bestowing action on a noun. Did that become commonplace with the rise of the search engine? Or have we always been inclined to morphing words?

My latest search topic is Edward R. Murrow and McCarthyism.

I don't recall spending a lot of time on Sen. McCarthy in school. Most of what I know about the blacklisting and persecution of that time, I learned through the movies and reading about the entertainment industry. For example my googling today is a result of watching Good Night, Good Luck last evening. Well, watching half of it anyway. It's not riveting but so much of history - the really important stuff - falls into this category it seems.

The movie, and the era it chronicles, has modern day implications.

Instead of a black list, we have a no fly and watch lists.

Instead of the media calling American's attention to the misuse of power and pointing out how easily it could happen to anyone, our media distracts - when it doesn't aid and abet.

The movie is drier than dust and unless you know that time period, and the industry, it's hard to figure out who the players are aside from Murrow, Fred Friendly and William Paley. However, the irony of the fact that it was the media using McCarthy's own words to bring him down, and the fact that this first use of "sound-bites" is what is now killing democracy in the U.S. by inches and yards, makes it worth slogging through.

The movie starts with a 1958 speech Murrow gave that all but ended his career at CBS. My research indicates he was not unaware of the effect he'd had on the television news industry and was uncomfortable even with the tools he helped pioneer. The speech reflects this when he accuses television, in so many words, of being an opiate of the masses* when it should be a tool of enlightenment for them.

A good movie for election year viewing and a not uninteresting mini-research sojourn either.

*A little irony in my choice of phrases as Karl Marx first used it to describe religion which I guess you could say television replaced.

I tend to argue that technology is bad for dating and relationships, mainly because I think that texting and Facebook and silly emails from online dating candidates can break down communication instead of building it. Well, this morning I saw a cute story about a man using the internets, as I like to call it, to create quite the romantic wedding gift.

One of my friends is always saying that I need to find myself a proper dork, and now I can see why: One my favorite websites about relationships/dating/sex, The Frisky, published a story about a tech nerd (who all girls secretly adore; don't deny it) who gave his wife-to-be a unique gift. A sneak preview: It involves typing "The Most Beautiful Bride in the World" into Google.

Check out the entire article here:
http://www.thefrisky.com/post/246-the-most-beautiful-wedding-gift-in-the-world/

And you thought Google was just good for stalking. And come on, don't even try to pretend that you don't use it for that.

Soalnya, kadang2 aku suka kehabisan ide sih. Nyari bahannya susah, baca2 majalah, blogwalking, googling, sampe nyari2 pertanyaan di Yahoo!Answers (aku sering nulis info komputer berdasarkan pertanyaan di Yahoo!Answers).

Lately, I've learned of Google's testing with this new Google search functionality. If this pushes through, google users would be able to arrange, comment and delete google results. Whoa! Interesting... that means giving more control to the users eh? My question is, how will it affect the accuracy of google results and do we really need this new functionality? Been googling like forever and I must say that it's unthinkable to live without Google search. I virtually google everything! As far as I'm concerned, as long as google gives me the relevant results, it's perfect and if they can improve on that, that would be great. Fast results! That's what really hooks me to googling and I don't think I have much time rearranging results or deleting them (the commenting part would be nice though). I'd rather spend my time browsing and clicking through the search hits and find what I'm really looking for more than anything else. Who knows? Maybe this would be great features though... it's yet to be seen.

note: I'm sure if I did, there would be a bunch of cool stuff about ... a bunch of people with the same name as mine, people with similar names minus a letter or two, people with my name reversed, or obituaries about dead people.

so, this blog is still in a fairly secret stage. i'm leaking it out slowly but surely, mostly by adding it to my various profiles and using it when i comment on blogs.

still, random strangers have found their way here already, mostly by way of search engines.

for nearly a decade this has been one of my favorite things, perusing my stats - referrals and search engine requests are of most interest to me. these are fairly benign, so far, but mildly entertaining:

a prayer for long life
early morning insomnia
sex with squeezing
help i can't stop squeezing my spots
what i'm supposed to feel
"walk tall, kick ass, learn to speak arabic"
catharsis
los angeles shallow people
my love for you has no strings attached.
intuition is a curse

so, my question for you is... how did YOU arrive here?

Sometimes I worry about my memory. I was trying to remember the name of a film I watched less than a week ago, and all I could remember about it was the name of the leading actress... Demi Moore. I knew the name of the leading actor, but it escaped me (and not for the first time...) I keep muddling him up with John Travolta, though I know very well he's not. So I think "John Travolta.... actually, it's that other one...", and the right name just doesn't come up because it's stuck behind the wrong name).

Gah.

I tried to remember what other films I have seen this guy in, and the only one I could remember was one that involved the Alaskan wilderness, a plane crash in icy water, a grizzly bear, and that other very famous actor I like very much. Only I couldn't remember HIS name, or the name of the film... All I could remember as an identifying feature was the phrase "there goes a man with a plane." I looked it up in Google, and would you believe, it didn't identify the film for me.

So now I had to try and remember the name of the other actor in that film. I knew he was in Silence of the Lambs (only I couldn't remember the name of *that* film, which I've never seen, and for some reason I couldn't remember 'Hannibal Lector' either). Are you getting frightened yet? I was!

Pondered...

Oh yes, wait a minute, I've never seen the film, but everybody's heard about liver with Chianti. So I typed that into Google (liver Chianti), followed a Wikipedia link, and bingo... had his name! Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Next Google search: Antony Hopkins film Alaskan wilderness. Bingo again! Film name: The Edge. Co-starring human male actor was Alec Baldwin, the one I link with John Travolta.

Third and final Google search: alec baldwin demi moore film mafia

And there it was... the film I was trying to remember! The Juror. What a palaver... and thank goodness for Google.

Hampir semua [top] search engine menyediakan fasilitas customisasi pencarian, termasuk google.

Misalnya : komputer tutorial filetype:pdf or filetype:doc

Mencari definisi kata bisa digunakan define. Misalnya : define:blogging
