Hoy me toca a mí comentar un grupillo de los que van al Summercase. En este caso, para mí un grupazo, Mogwai. Este grupo escocés, por lo que dicen, han tomado como referencia en su estilo musical a grupos tales como Joy Division, The Cure, Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine y sobre todo los abuelos del post-rock Slint. Sin duda estamos ante uno de los grandes grupos de post-rock en activo. Una vez vistos en directo, hace unos cuantos meses (el año pasado ya) y sinceramente me dejaron roto. Tienen un directazo, y ahora al Summercase, vienen a "presentar" su disco menos interpretado, el Young Team, que cuenta con este tracklist:

El último disco, "Mr Beast", es una pasada en serio, y el "Happy Songs for Happy People" igual, abajo después de la reseña os dejo unos videos. Los más representativos de este grupo.

Mogwai es una banda escocesa de post-rock formada en 1995, llegando a ser una de las bandas de post-rock más conocidas. Su nombre se debe a la criatura de la película Gremlins, que significa "espíritu maligno" en cantonés, aunque el guitarrista Stuart Braithwaite ha mencionado al respecto que "no tiene un significado importante y siempre intentamos conseguir uno mejor, pero como un montón de cosas que nunca conseguimos."

Su música consiste en largos temas instrumentales a base de guitarras, siguiendo la tradición dentro del post-rock, alrededor de una melodía inicial; también son conocidos por su tendencia a intercalar pasajes tranquilos con pasajes más fuertes de una forma muy dinámica, con riffs de bajo muy definidos y un sonido más bien introspectivo, a ratos oscuro y a ratos potente y soberbio.

El grupo se formó en 1995 y originariamente firmó con el sello indie de Glasgow Chemikal Underground, pero ahora son distribuidos por distintos sellos como Matador Records en Estados Unidos y con Play It Again Sam Records en el Reino Unido. A su vez también han desarrollado su propio sello, Rock Action Records.

Su estilo está claramente influido por The Dirty Three, The Cure, Joy Division, The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, y los abuelos del post-rock Slint. Durante 2004 el grupo abrió para las giras de dos de sus héroes Pixies y The Cure. En ocasiones el estilo de Mogwai ha sido vinculado con los sub-estilos, math rock, art rock, y metal instrumental. Así como su sonido está muy lejos del punk rock tradicional, el grupo se considera cercano a la ética punk.

Mr Beast, el último disco de Mogwai ha sido editado el 6 de Marzo de 2006. Con el que vuelven a un sonido más pesado más cercano al Mogwai Young Team de 1997. Aun así, Mogwai se ha desecho de sus In crescendo "post-rock" elementos, y sus canciones son más rockeras con más gancho y letras.

Mogwai han producido el remix de 'Plans' del grupo británico Bloc Party en su álbum de remezclas de 2005 Silent Alarm Remixed.

Post-Rock is a beautiful thing. But, only when done right. Well, that's with everything right? Well . . . everything except pancakes. But, I stray. So, this British Post-Rock band, Maybeshewill is as beautiful as a Botticelli Cherub. The foursome group implements some of the most grooviest rock orchestrations, with the perfect blend of electronics on their album Not For Want Of Trying. Think of them as a more softer side of 65daysofstatic, but not too soft . . . not by much. Well, on some songs, yes. But, allow me to continue, ok? The UK outfit is primarily a DIY one. They set up their own bookings, handle their own money, and produce their own music. They feel that music should be fun for the creator and not just the listener. And, yes, they seemed to be having fun jamming out for these sessions. Each track takes you to a new place, covers a new ground, and places in you a new vulnerable, yet empowering, state. The guys have a great sense of humor. They even named one of their songs "The Paris Hilton Sex Tape." Though everyone has seen the tape whether they wanted to or not, not everyone has heard their musical rendition of that "Night In Paris." And, if the sex tape was as grippingly moving as this music is, it probably would have made that nightvision moment that much more memorable. With sonic blastings of walls of guitar sounds, and a machine gun drum set-up, not to mention a motivating piano performance, it compels you to almost take up Prince of Persia-styled Free Running. Hopefully, you won't do that unless you're actually trained for it. On the title track, the quartet assaults listeners right out of the gate with blasting shoegazing power chords. Then, they pull out a Peter Finch sound sample from his speech in the movie Network. The music turns down for the first time the sample is used. Allowing Finch's words to build you up where the music was formerly taken you. Then, when it comes back on, the music becomes one of the best backing tracks to such a stirring and teeth-clenching moment in movie history. It's hard to say that this band is going to be the band that breaks Post-Rock into mainstream attention. Especially when Explosions In The Sky still didn't hit that mark after creating the backing sound for the movie Friday Night Lights. But, it's even harder to say that this band doesn't have the goods to blow the socks right off of your feet and straight through the front of your shoes.

First Aid Kit is probably the best band that you've never heard of. Hailing from Spain, this guy-girl duo(Carles Querol & Agnès Aran) conjures up some of the most enchanting music that can ever be heard with ears. The Agnès is the lead singer of the band and she sings in English with an easily recognizable accent. The music is just crazy. Combining elements of Shoegazing, Electronics and Post-Rock, they create magic in the form of melody. Sounding like My Bloody Valentine, Explosions In The Sky, and a mother singing a soothing lullaby. They released their first LP titled F1rst in 2006, to virtually no notice over in USA. Which is completely sad. The album housed the mesmerizing songs "Still On Fire," "Forgotten Sky" and "Greenish." Actually, each tune on the album featured something that seemed to play at your lost childhood: an age of innocence and wonder. I would dare anyone to listen to them and state their distaste for their music. If such happened, I'd have to call the person a heartless monster. The duo turned around and decided to release a new collection of songs equally as soul lifting in 2008 on the album Plaits. Again, singing in English, the Querol & Aran bring more of the same. And, no, it isn't something that would make listeners fret for feeling that they've already heard the music before. Why? Because it takes you back to the same wonderland that you went to when you heard their first work. Their lead single from this album is "Truth Can Hurt." The video for the song features three children just being children. Having fun and showing no care for the troubles of the world at large. Wasn't the world a majestic place when such was the case? The actual first song of this album "Fake/Real" actually has children singing on the song, followed by Carles and Agnès singing together using the same lyrics the children sang before them. It lets you know what you're in store for the rest of the album. And, frankly, it should never be a problem to enjoy such delightful melodies and the joyous memories/feelings that they bring. If you can find their music, I strongly urgingly demand that you acquire it immediately. Yes, it can change your life . . . yes, it can.

Hoy es un 2X1 jejeje, Confieso que  no soy fan de esta banda Inglesa que comenzó su carrera a finales de los setenta, tal vez porque no son de mi época, y no los había escuchado... Pero que uno no hace por amor?.

Una vez alguien me dijo que me parecía a Robert Smith por el pelo alborotado que tengo, jeje, Pero aquí quiero compartir los éxitos de esta Banda que es todo un Icono dentro de muchas generaciones.

El decimotercer álbum de la banda, previsto para 2008, está actualmente en fase de desarrollo.

June Of 44 est un quatuor provenant de Chicago, et pratique un noise-rock tourmenté, avec une approche post-rock, depuis 1995. Ce groupe est composé d’illustres membres ayant été dans divers combos qui ont obtenu une certaine réputation dans le milieu noise des années 90: Rodan, Hoover, Codeine, Lungfish… Depuis leur débuts, pas moins de 5 albums ont été publiés, plus une collaboration avec les bataves de The Ex, « In The Fishtank ». « Engine Takes To The Water », l’album dont je vais causer ici, est leur première sortie.

Résolument sombre, ce premier essai des quatre membres de June Of 44 frappe tout d'abord par ses errements lunatiques, reflétant une atmosphère torturée, presque malsaine. Ainsi, si l'album démarre sur un arpège délicat, fait d'harmoniques, on a juste le temps de se laisser bercer que le morceau embraye sur une tonalité beaucoup plus dynamique et agressive, rentre-dedans. Il en sera comme cela tout au long des 41 minutes que constituent "Engine Takes to the Water": un jeu de montagnes russes, entre moments de dévastation sonique, et instants de mélancolie intimiste contemplative. Le guide, à travers ce voyage, pourrait être très bien Jeff Mueller, le chanteur, si celui-ci ne se mettait pas finalement à pouvoir nous surprendre en changeant totalement sa manière de chanter, presque schizophrénique: cris libérateurs, chant agressif, murmuré, plaintif. Mueller passe par tout les registres, surprenant ainsi l'auditeur, ne sachant pas à quoi s'attendre. L'auditeur d'ailleurs, c'est bien lui qui est pris en otage tout au long de ce premier jet, faisant les frais de tous les grands écarts que peut comporter la musique du quatuor. On est réellement ballotté à travers les incessants changements de plans, d'émotions transmises; une certaine tension restant toujours mise en place, comme une ligne directrice. Impossible d'ailleurs de donner un morceau représentatif, tant cet album est à prendre comme un tout. C'est un véritable univers qui est tissé par le groupe, un univers ou l'on est happé, et où, à l'issue de la superbe chanson, "Sink Is Busted", mélancolique en diable, on a réellement du mal à s'y détacher.

The San Marcos, Texas based quartet consists of two guitarists (Chris King and Jeremy Galindo) a bassist (Raymond Brown) and a drummer (Andrew Miller). They currently have an EP titled Young Mountain and a full self-titled LP released through Magic Bullet Records.

Their self-titled album is a great balance of electrical ambiances and building compositions that climax into a lush orchestration of aural perseverance. I can’t help but feel motivated and inspired every time I listen to these guys.

Taking a look at my iPod playlist it is clearly becoming more and more apparent that I have a post-rock addiction. Either that or I am a complete sucker for a guitarist with a delay pedal. There's just something about this genre of music that fits all situations. One of the biggest things is more often then not there is no singer present. A pure instrumental joy which is great to work to. Along with that these songs gush with inspiration making it easy to run or workout to. Hell, it's even great to fall asleep to.

I highly recommend picking up there self-titled LP or the previously released EP, Young Mountain. Both are stellar albums and worth grabbing if you like the genre.

En este EP de debut, Expedición a las Estrellas nos sorprenden no con un sonido demasiado innovador sino con una mezcla de estilos y unas ideas pocas veces combinadas con tanto éxito. Su sonido se basa en beber de todas las propuestas más experimentales dentro del panorama rock internacional, tales como el post rock y el post metal, sazonado con algún elemento screamo. Nada nuevo bajo el sol entonces, ¿no? En principio no, pero hay que escuchar los cinco temas que componen esta obra para darse cuenta de que no estamos ante un grupo cualquiera. Tras una breve pero preciosista introducción de apenas dos minutos que nos evoca algo similar a un verdadera expedición a las estrellas, llegamos al corte más largo del EP y a la postre el más estimulante: La distancia se oscurece entre pétalos de luna. Un corte progresivo que comienza con un suave piano que da paso a un pasaje con cierto regusto a Explosions in the Sky para inesperadamente desembocar en un violento pasaje crust con una voz típicamente death. Tras esto llega la calma y los ecos post rockeros vuelven a aparecer recordándonos a bandas como Caspian; una atmósfera muy trabajada y un sampler de voz nos invitan a sumergirnos y a dejarnos llevar por el sonido del grupo. Diez minutos de pura intensidad y melancolía.

La sorpresa de este trabajo llega con la tercera canción, 1979-2007, dedicada a uno de los miembros del grupo, fallecido el año pasado. El inicio nos descoloca desde el primer momento, la calma in crescendo de los dos primeros temas contrasta con el demoledor comienzo de este corte instrumental: un riff metálico, pesado, adornado con arreglos propios del post metal. Este se desarrolla hasta un bajón en el que el grupo parece improvisar hasta que una melodía de guitarra y piano nos introduce en quizá el mejor momento del álbum: un pasaje emotivo como pocos que al final se convierte en el riff del comenzo. Sin duda uno de los cortes más refrescantes de este año.

Las dos últimas canciones son dos buenos temas porst rockeros in crescendo que van ganando intensidad hasta que estallan. Merece la pena destacar el piano en Ens Seminis (Phoenix), instrumento además presente durante todo el disco y que le da un aura especial a sus composiciones. El último tema es también de intensidad creciente y lo que destacan aquí son las guitarras distorsionadas.

Intensidad, preciosismo, emotividad, contundencia y distorsión, todo ello en apenas veinticinco minutos en uno de los debuts más interesantes que recuerdo. Si todo va como debe ir, Expedición a las Estrellas pueden convertirse en muy breve espacio de tiempo en una banda de referencia en el panorama mundial, porque calidad e ideas tienen de sobra. Sólo queda ver cómo se defienden en el larga duración. No dejéis de darles una oportunidad.

A ten jest po prostu świetny i co równie ważne równy. Przez cały czas towarzyszy nam wspaniały, melancholijny klimat. Przy jego tworzeniu wielką rolę odgrywają skrzypce, które bardzo często wysuwają się na pierwszy plan i są prowadzącym instrumentem. Pełne emocji, świetnie zaaranżowane i zgrywające się z resztą instrumentarium, smyczkowe pasaże stanowią o sile tego albumu. Płyta w większości została zbudowana wokół tego instrumentu co znacząco wyróżnia ją z grupy tworów post-rockowych. Nie sposób się nudzić, ponieważ melodie grane przez skrzypka są bardzo zróżnicowane: od podniosłych („You’re Listening To A Dead Man”), przez dołujące („Words for Snow”), aż po folkowe („Crashing To The Floor”).

Podobnie jak dźwięki skrzypiec równie ważny, w przypadku Clann Zú, dla utrzymaniu klimatu jest wokal. Tutaj może nie jakiś wybitny, ale trzymający poziom i doskonale zgrywający się z resztą zespołu. Wokalista wie kiedy wyciągnąć głoskę, zaśpiewać niskim głosem, zastosować melorecytację. Dba o różnorodność swoich partii i za to mu chwała.

Wydawać by się mogło, że skoro prym w muzyce Clann Zú wiodą skrzypce, to reszta instrumentów będzie zupełnie na uboczu. Nic bardziej mylnego. Równie istotną rolę spełnia chociażby perkusja. Gdyby bębniarz tak od niechcenia pukałby w gary cały klimat by prysł. Jako przykład może posłużyć moim zdaniem najlepszy utwór na krążku „Five Thousand More”, gdzie perkusja gra niemal trip-hopowo, podobnie zresztą jak w innym utworze pt. „All The People”. Inna sprawa jest już z obiema gitarami. Właściwie żaden riff nie zapadł mi w pamięć. Mimo że gitarę prowadzącą świetnie zastępują skrzypce, to trochę brakuje mi mocniejszego uderzenia w struny „wiosła”.

Podsumowując: płyta jak najbardziej warta poznania. Lekkostrawna, przyjemna, ciekawa, niebanalna, nie nużąca ani przez chwile, w zasadzie odpowiednia do odpalenia o każdej porze i humorze… Ech… Szkoda, że zespół się rozpadł.

Una dintre primele intalniri cu Kaki King a fost pe lastfm unde vazusem un videoclip un cel mai ciudat stil de tapping. Apoi am luat la ascultat primele doua albume, care mi s-au parut in linii mari de un experimental alternativ/neo-prog, pana a aparut albumul din 2008 care, probabil la cererea producatorilor incearca sa fie mai post-rock/shoegaze. Insa Kaki King nu se poate desparti de improvizatii, de tapping, de sincope, de masurile deloc traditionale.

Imi place foarte mult live si ultimul concert Interface(sesiuni live organizate de spinner.com) e un acustic cum nu am auzit de multa vreme.

Sorpresa mayúscula me he llevado con este disco. Hace relativamente poco publicaron un EP (antesala de este Not For Want Of Trying) llamado Seraphim & Cherubim (sí, como la segunda canción de este disco), que a pesar de sonar bien, no me parecía nada del otro jueves.

La sorpresa viene al bajar este disco por mera curiosidad y encontrarme con un trabajo bastante completo, con algunos peros, pero altamente prometedor teniendo en cuenta que es el primer larga duración de estos ingleses.

¿Y qué practican estos Maybeshewill? Pues un postrock muy influenciado por 65daysofstatic, pero que consiguen definir una personalidad más o menos propia. Como podréis suponer, nos encontramos con un postrock aderezado con toques electrónicos (a veces con cierta inspiración con Aphex Twin) y el piano como protagonista.

¿Y qué ofrecen Maybeshewill respecto a 65daysofstatic? Pues algunos puntuales riffs de corte más metalero (bastante bien insertados todo sea dicho), e incluyen eventuales voces/coros/samplers de películas que dan como resultado los momentos más destacados del disco.

Hay que señalar especialmente los coros a mitad de He Films The Clouds Pt. 2 con una base machacona de fondo, y Not For Want Of Trying, con ese comienzo casi metalero que da paso a unos pianos y un energico extracto de la película The Network haciendo que la canción desemboque a un "subidón" increíble. Sin duda, los mejores momentos del disco, los cuáles ya justifican su escucha.

En definitiva, interesante disco que convierte a Maybeshewill a una banda a tener en cuenta en un género como el postrock, que ya da síntomas de saturación. Y si explotan las características que les diferencian de 65daysofstatic, pueden convertise en uno de los nuevos abanderados de este género.
