There are two new and very different movies at Hong Kong cinemas this week. One is Ridley Scott’s spy movie “Body of Lies”, the other is the latest romantic comedy from Woody Allen “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. I had expected to like the Ridley Scott film more, particularly as Woody Allen has been a bit off form for a while, but the comedy worked better.

 “Body of Lies” is based on a 2007 novel by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius. The central character is a CIA agent, Roger Ferris (Leonard DiCaprio), trying to track down Al Saleem, a terrorist leader who is conducting a bombing campaign worldwide and is suspected to be in Jordan. Ferris, in turn, is being watched by his supervisor Ed Hoffmann (Russell Crowe), often from satellites or spy planes.

Hoffmann directs many aspects of the operation as if by remote control, chatting on his mobile phone and making ruthless life-and-death decisions about people in the Middle East, sometimes while he’s doing domestic tasks like taking his daughter to school.

It's hard to see why Ridley Scott wanted to make “Body of Lies”. Possibly the novel has a density and a complexity that appealed.  It also has a jaundiced view of American anti-terrorist activity in the Middle East, which - it says - acts without caring much whether the people it kills are innocent or guilty. The problem is that in the movie, the complexity often turns into muddle and too much of an emphasis on background colour, and the moral laxity of the main characters makes you not care about any of them.

Ferris, who speaks Arabic, is in charge of things on the ground, but doesn’t always have all the information he needs to make the right decisions. His supervisor is manipulating him as surely as he’s manipulating the assorted Middle Eastern characters they are dealing with.  For Hoffmann, because he doesn’t build personal relationships with any of their collaborators, everybody is disposable.

When Ferris gets a lead to a safe house used by Islamic terrorists with connections to Al- Saleem, he is sent to Jordan to replace the CIA’s main agent there. The man had refused to work with the Jordanians; Ferris knows it’s the only way to get anything done. He builds an alliance with Hani (Mark Strong), the head of Jordanian Intelligence, who makes one crucial request of him, that he will not lie and betray their trust.

Inevitably, and because he doesn’t know exactly what Hoffmann is up to, Ferris is put in a position where he either does lie, or seems to be doing so.

One major problem comes as the result of one of Ferris’s own plans. He decides to create the appearance of a fake terrorist cell, in the hope that it will smoke out Al Saleem who will be curious about what’s going on. He picks on a random architect, engineers meetings between him and low-level terrorists, and sets up a fake terrorist attack by the fictitious cell, with all the clues pointing to that man. He does not seem to realize what most of us realize immediately – that he’s placing an innocent man in danger.

This one operation itself would have been a good strong plot line for any film. One of the problems with “Body of Lies” is that a lot happens before we get to it, and much else happens while it’s going on. There’s even a spurious love interest in the form of an Iraqi nurse. Given how unfocused it all is, important areas don’t get the attention they deserve, and you are left to find them amid all the clutter. While DiCaprio and a deliberately overweight Crowe do fine, neither occupies the screen as brightly as Mark Strong, as the Jordanian Intelligence Head, who is – despite his own pragmatism – the only alleged force of good who has a sense of honour. For me, as a whole, the movie is a disappointment.

Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is the opposite of a disappointment. He’s been off form lately. Maybe the last Woody Allen film I fully enjoyed was 1999’s “Sweet and Lowdown”. As Allen makes around a film a year, and I’ve seen most of them, that means he has struck out several times over for me.

“Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is a welcome return to form, although not, it must be admitted, to his peak days of “Manhattan”, and “Stardust Memories”. Perhaps because the story is about two American women in Barcelona, Allen feels on surer ground with his characters. One of them, Vicky (Rebecca Hall), is about to marry. The other, Cristina (Scarlett Johannson) is footloose and fancy-free, having recently broken up with someone.

In Barcelona, they meet painter Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) who would very much like to sleep with both of them, even at the same time if they are willing. Vicky says she is not, although we are not prone to believe her, even at first. Cristina thinks a fling with an artist might be what she’s looking for in life. They go off to a small Spanish village with him, and all three grow closer.

Although Vicky is interested in him, and they do spend one night together, it’s Cristina who eventually moves in to his studio and apartment. After all, Vicky does have that troublesome fiance, who has even come to Spain for a pre-wedding wedding. And then the highly-strung wife from whom he is separated, and who once tried to stab him, returns. She’s Maria Elena (played by Penelope Cruz), the epitome of the passionate and tempestuous Spanish artist. She too is a painter. She and Juan had a turbulent relationship which takes off again when she begins to live with them again after having tried to kill herself. The two artists find that somehow, with Cristina there, they can achieve some balance. But this ménage a trios may not be what Cristina is looking for.

The movie’s funny and cynical. It has overtones of the novels of Henry James in which he sometimes contrasted naïve and brash Americans with those shady Europeans, usually to the American’s loss. It’s funny not because Allen has written laugh out loud specific set pieces but because there are insights into character that we see as true, and sometimes even painful to watch. As in one scene where Vicky's fiance calls while she's dining with the artist, and she pretends the reception is too bad to talk to him.

Neither Vicky nor Cristina are the nicest of characters. And neither of them knows it. I wasn’t sure at first I was going to like the film. Johannsson and Hall begin by delivering Woody Allen’s lines in a style that’s too much like his own, but they do get over this after a while. You’re left with a comedy that both amuses and dismays, as Allen – like Eric Rohmer – looks lucidly at the romantic foibles and self-delusions of people who will almost certainly never see them equally lucidly themselves .

The Jonas Brothers have chosen Victoria Beckham as the person they'd most like to send in to space because “she would show aliens the perfect body of a woman.” What? What? WHAT? So the boys are saying the perfect woman has fake tits and anorexic limbs? Couldn't they have picked a real woman like Eva Mendes or Scarlett Johansson. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Posh, but to say she has the perfect body, at least coming from guys, is a tad bit shocking.

The Bronases chose the former Spice Girl as part of the social network site Bebo project called A Message From Earth, a digital time capsule which will beamed into space from the National Space Agency in the Ukraine.

Arrivato alla fine, con fatica, dibattendosi e resistendo a stento a Morfeo,  uno si domanda quale sia il senso di un film come THE BLACK DAHLIA, esercizio di stile lustro e seppiatissimo. Con brillantina anni quaranta. Qualche bella idea formale che si unisce ad un goffo accumulo finale di eventi e personaggi che complica, trascura, rende pesante e stucchevole. E il cast non aiuta: Hartnett, pettinatino e con quel cappellone,non ha il viso adatto, sembra un ragazzo troppo cresciuto. Ti aspetti sempre che da un momento all'altro tiri fuori una mazza da baseball per giocare. La Scarlett, secondo me sopravvalutata come attrice, si affida interamente al suo labbro superiore, limitandosi a inturgidirlo attonita. Hilary Swank è brava ma non è propriamente una bellezza travolgente, tant'è vero che va in giro con una luce bianchissima costantemente piantata in faccia e truccata  per annullarsi i lineamenti marcati il più possibile.

E poi da Brian De Palma , che con questo film aprì la 63° Mostra di Venezia, il regista della trilogia gangster "Scarface" (mitico), "Gli intoccabili" (bello), "Cartito's Way" (bellissimo), ti aspetteresti qualcosa all'altezza di cotanto successo filmico. Invece questo suo  ritorno al noir, al nero e alla notte, dentro e fuori, adattando un libro di uno scrittore, James Ellroy, che racconta e ricostruisce la storia dell'orrendo omicidio di un'ambiziosa attricetta di Hollywood, Elizabeth Betty Short, soprannominata The Black Dahlia, omicidio rimasto irrisolto nella giungla corrotta della Los Angeles Anni 40, mi lascia con l'amaro in bocca.
Il corpo della bella ritrovato non venne mai mostrato, troppo raccapricciante e ripugnante, nudo, tagliato a metà all'altezza della vita, gli organi interni svuotati, la bocca tagliata da un orecchio all'altro, come in una smorfia clownesca.

Quindi dicevamo Los Angeles, 1947. Lavorano gomito a gomito nella squadra omicidi gli ex-pugili, ora piedipiatti, Bucky Bleichert (Jose Hartnett) e Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) che sbattono contro il cadavere straziato di Betty Short, un attricetta porno lesbo e chissà cosa altro. I due, nei momenti di svago, compongono un inossidabile trio con la bionda Kay Lake (Scarlett Johansson), ex-pupa di un gangster prossimo a rimettere piede fuori dalla gattabuia.

La ragazza flirta con Lee, ma fa anche gli occhi dolci a Bucky, che resiste in nome dell'amicizia (fino a quando il collega non tira le cuoia). Anche perchè conosce, mentre indaga, visto che quella ragazza morta (la Dalia Nera) è diventata l'ossessione della città e dei due sbirri, la ricca, lesbica e disinibita (anche non nell'ordine) Madeleine Linscott (Hilary Swank), figlia di un Caltagirone (leggi palazzinaro) dell'epoca. Insomma quanto marcio gira per la città. Quanto dolore, compromessi, triangoli e deriva esistenziale, quando metti i piedi nel fango. Niente di nuovo o particolare, diremmo.
Insomma un deludente poliziesco dalla storia intricata. Con qualche citazione di film muti (L'uomo che ride) e con qualche scena truce e povera di reale suspence. Solo la scena della doppia caduta dalla balaustra (con relativa sparatoria sulle scale) è degna di nota. Attori appena passabili dei quali posso dire che basta la carrellata dei giudizi estetici espressa in precedenza, con la Scarlett che come dark lady mi lascia alquanto dubbioso. Fascinosa? Bah!!
Le immagini mostrate della Dalia sono solo quelle di una serie di pseudo provini in bianco e nero che Bucky guarda e riguarda. Insomma cinema nel cinema. Un film fumoso.

Il film racconta la storia di un pittore spagnolo, Juan Antonio, che conosce e s'innamora di due turiste americane, Vicky e Cristina. La prima è in procinto di sposarsi, mentre la seconda è alla ricerca di avventure sessuali. Il loro incontro farà ingelosire l'ex fidanzata del pittore, Maria Elena.

Sarah Silverman, funny as always (well mostly), but effective?

Usually I CAN be tricked with reverse psychology, but this was still to obvious. And if Sarah once again, Jonah Hill and that one Friends joke wasn't in it, it would be unwatchable. Not safe for work by the way.

Me siento fatal. Yo que siempre había dividido las películas de Woody Allen entre las que me gustan y las que me entusiasman, me veo en la triste situación de añadir un apartado más: las que me aburren soberanamente. Y espero de todo corazón que ese apartado sólo tenga dentro esta película y no tenga que meter ninguna más en el futuro. La historia no tiene ningún ritmo. Los argumentos que normalmente Allen desarrolla con brillantes diálogos y acciones en las que se desarrolla la historia, se ven sustituidos por un narrador que resume cada escena hasta dejar la película reducida a un cuento superficial.
Con la historia tan jugosa que podría haber salido combinando personajes tan diferentes (una niña bien, otra algo más viva la vida, un pintor bohemio al que quieren hacer pasar por el típico español, y una artista neurótica y paranoica hasta el extremo), la película termina siendo un enorme video de promoción turística (fantástico, eso sí) con algunos personajes que pasan por ahí y dicen sus cosas.
Me quedo con lo que disfruté viendo Barcelona y con la interpretación de Penélope Cruz, que nunca ha sido santa de mi devoción, pero borda el personaje de pintora desequilibrada. No es que los demás actores estén mal ni mucho menos, pero los personajes con los que tenían que lidiar eran tan planos que no daban para mucho lucimiento. Y no os imagináis lo que me duele reconocer que Woody Allen ha escrito protagonistas planos. Porque una de las cosas que más he admirado siempre de él es lo complicado y poliédrico que puede llegar a ser alguien salido de su pluma.
Todo lo demás, incluyendo la canción, con una instrumentación deliciosa tapada por una voz absolutamente chirriante, prefiero olvidarlo cuanto antes.

En très gros (vous l’aurez peut-être compris, je n'aime pas résumer les films), c’est l’histoire de deux jeunes Américaines qui passent l’été à Barcelone où elles sont séduites par un artiste peintre muy caliente, empêtré de son côté dans une histoire sans fin avec une ex-femme folle furieuse - qui n’est pas réellement une ex qui plus est.
Le scénario se déroule en Espagne, et un Woody à la sauce ibère c’est encore plus piquant surtout quand on retrouve Penélope Cruz et Javier Bardem à l’affiche. Le réalisateur a pris soin d’inclure également au casting Scarlett Johansson qui semble beaucoup l’inspirer depuis Match Point. Une belle brochette d’acteurs qui nous régalent sur l’écran en un trio troublant.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona est un plat savoureux à déguster sans modération avec une petite goutte de Barcelone (exotique et romantique) dedans. Dommage qu'on n'entende pas plus de langue espagnole dans le film d'ailleurs...

Esta película debe verse en versión original ya que el doblaje quita el encanto de la película,como pasa con otras muchas. Quizás en el momento en el que mas se nota esto es en la escena en la que Penélope Cruz y Javier Bardem discuten alternando el español y el inglés como idioma, resaltando la expontaneidad y la pasión de los dos personajes.
Woody Allen nos enseña lo que todos ya sabemos: En verano puede pasar cualquier cosa,pero pase lo que pase termina cuando este acaba y cada uno vuelve a su nido.
Esa es la razón por la que los veranos se recuerdan y se reciben con tanta alegría: nunca sabes lo que te puede pasar.

Bardem, que hasta la fecha no había captado especialmente mi atención, me atrapó en el último guión de Woody Allen convertido en pintor de cuadros, bohemio y  coleccionista de mujeres hermosas. Penélope interpreta un papel excepcional de ex mujer loca del protagonista que intenta suicidarse, matar a tiros a Patricia y formar un trío fugaz con Scarlett y Bardem. Scarlett continúa encantándome y su papel como Cristina resulta insulso y estúpido al principio pero sincero y dulce después. Patricia, a quien no recuerdo haberla visto en ninguna otra película (se queda atrás en popularidad en cuanto a los otros actores) me recuerda en ciertas actitudes a mí y mis conflictos internos recientes: quiero pero no quiero, sí pero no sé, me encantaría aunque...

Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona es como las últimas películas del director que tienen algo que enganchan y decepcionan a la vez. Los finales dejan siempre una sensación de querer más, de esperar un desenlace sorprendente que venga a coronar la hora y media de multitud de sensaciones que has venido sintiendo desde el principio. Pero casi nunca pasa. Me pasó también con Match Point y Scoop, pero este hombre es así. Para algo es diferente.

But he's going to get on with it, and you Internets are really happy about it and keeping searching for Jennifer Butler Murray, probably because you had no idea he was married, and figured he was just doing to hot chicks in his movies. Like Scarlett Johansson.

Qual a melhor estratégia para chegar ao trabalho depois de uma noite etílica, com aquela bela ressaca e, mesmo assim, manter-se com um ar produtivo?

– Basta fazer a dramaturgia do trabalho: baita encenação, pegar muito o telefone, fingir entrevistas incríveis. E, com o telefone na mão ninguém vai perturbar sua ressaca sagrada. Na arte de amar (não sexualmente falando), quem sabe mais: o homem ou a mulher? Eis a questão.

– Sempre a mulher. Vocês já nascem sabendo. A gente vai aprender alguma coisa dos 30 anos pra frente. E quando começamos a saber um pouquinho, não podemos executar direito: já estamos com o pé na cova (...) Se bem que, às vezes uma cãibra, é consagradora. Tempo atrás, tive uma cãibra na hora 'h', estiquei lá o pernão (...) e a menina disse que gozou como nunca. Ficou me enchendo de agradecimentos. E tudo não passou de uma cãibra.

Mas, peraí: se nós, mulheres, já nascemos sabendo amar, isso que eu li no twitter (via @marianarosa) de que 'amar alguém é meio caminho andado para se ser manipulada', faz mais sentido pra gente desde cedo?

– Sim, tem essa desvantagem. O amor doentio é uma praga. Procurando evitar, é de bom-tom. Mas eu estava me referindo mais à pratica sexual em si - se é que dá pra falar que uma cãibra tenha a ver com kama sutra.

Dude, I have to hand it to you.  You somehow managed to bag a 23-year old (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) megastar as your lawfully-wedded wife.  She is more famous than you, has more money than you, is a big proponent for polygamy, and just did a threesome scene with Penelope Cruz.  She even beat Marisa Miller, I said MARISA MILLER, in the Elite 8 of the Bigger Dance.  I don't even care that she is a shitty singer or that she likes SpongeBob.  Hey man, you remember when she was in the music video for Mandy Moore's first single, Candy?  No?  I don't either, but who gives a fuck, she has DSLs.  Now let's take a look at a brief filmography for the both of you:

Wow man, you are looking good there.  She has done movies that garnered critical acclaim; you did one which had a character named Dusty Dinkleman.  But seriously, if you would have gone through with marrying Alanis Morisette I would have condemned you to a life of solitude in the Himalayas with only eucalyptus nectar to sustain yourself on.  I can do that.

David Duchovny. LOSERS (this is bad)

Washington Huskies football and Seattle Seahawks football. This is getting ridiculous.  The Huskies can't do things they teach you in Pop Warner, and the Seahawks can't do things they teach you in high school.  I can't tell if the Huskies are trying to emulate the Seahawks, or if the Seahawks are trying to emulate the Huskies.  Thank god for being able to drink in parking lots because there is nothing else redeeming about these "contests."  We are like the goddamn team in hit movie Gridiron Gang starring The Rock before they get good. And that is bad.

The Sex in the City movie.  I haven't seen it, but what a waste of fucking time.

Clay Aiken.  Took you long enough.

Como ven Scarlett Johansson es una chica bastante blanca y no va a ser muy fácil aplicarle un bronceado que parezca natural, pero para photoshop no hay nada imposible.

Primer paso: Duplicamos la capa fondo yendo al menú Capa > Duplicar capa y le damos el nombre de Copia.

Segundo paso: Ahora cambiamos el modo de capa a Multiplicar, aquí la imagen se oscurece. Si nota que se oscureció demasiado baje la opacidad.

Tercer paso: Aplicamos un filtro de fotografía de mas o menos un 25% y escogemos un filtro Cálido, imagen > Ajustes > Filtro de Fotografía.

Cuarto paso: Ahora  vamos a quitarle el exceso de amarillo y  darle un color más natural, vamos a Imagen  > Ajustes > Corrección selectiva y ajustamos los controles como en las imagenes siguientes.

Quinto paso: Ahora ajustamos los niveles, menú Imagen > Ajustes > Niveles.

Sexto paso: Con tanto ajuste nuestra imagen a perdido brillo así que vamos al menú Imagen > Ajustes > Brillo y cotraste.

Séptimo paso: Creamos una máscara de capa en la capa copia, dando clic en el icono Añadir máscara vectorial de la paleta de capas.

Octavo paso: Presionamos D en nuestro teclado para establecer el Negro como color frontal y el Blanco color de fondo, luego presionamos X para que el color frontal sea el blanco.

Noveno paso: Nos ubicamos sobre la máscara de capa y seleccionamos la herramienta borrador, luego empezamos a borrar todo lo que no sea piel, ojos, cabello, vestido, dientes y fondo. Si nos equivocamos establecemos con D el color frontal Negro.

Si lo desea puede ocultar la capa fondo para ver que es lo que esta borrando.

Y este es el resultado.
