Luis Aragonés took over from Zico this summer and has already added a little spanish magic with the signings of Daniel Güiza & Josico. Captain Alex is regarded as the best player in turkey at this present time and plays just behind the strikers, He has a magical left foot and is deadly from free kicks.

In goal they have the giant Volkan Demirel who impressed a host of managers with his fantastic display for Turkey at the Euros in the summer.

The veteran defenders Roberto Carlos, Diego Lugano & Edu Dracena make up a hard south American back line

They also have little Emre Belözoğlu signed this summer from the toon and the pacey winger Colin Kâzım-Richards.

A very dangerous counter attacking team as Seville found out last season, Pretty solid at the back and have talented players in midfield and up front.

Weaknesses?
If things start to go wrong some of the Turkish players have shown in the past that they can lose there heads and get a red. The fans can also turn very quickly on the players and manager.

Should be a cracking contest and we look forward to visiting Turkey and welcoming the Fener fans to the emirates.

The UEFA Appeals Body has rejected the appeal made by the Turkish Football Association (TFF) following the Control and Disciplinary Body's decision to ban goalkeeper Volkan Demirel for two matches for his red card against the Czech Republic.

Decision upheld
Consequently the decision of UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body is upheld, and with Volkan Demirel having already served one part of the two-match ban during Turkey's quarter-final against Croatia, he will complete the suspension in Wednesday's UEFA EURO 2008™ semi-final against Germany. Turkey's first-choice goalkeeper at the finals, he was sent off late in his team's third Group A game, against the Czech Republic on 15 June.

Turkish FA fine
The Appeals Body also upheld the fine imposed on the TFF, amounting to CHF44,000 (€27,000), for crowd disturbances and the improper conduct of the team and officials.

Turkey are through to the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championship for the first time at Croatia's expense after a thrilling match in Vienna was decided on penalties after the two sides had swapped goals in the final moments of extra time.

Sensational comeback
When Ivan Klasnić headed in Luka Modrić's cross with a minute of the overtime period to play, Croatia looked to have booked their place in Wednesday's semi-final against Germany. However, for the third game running, Turkey sensationally hit back at the death to force the first shoot-out of these finals when Semih Şentürk drove in, with the aid of a deflection, from just inside the area. They went on to win 3-1 on penalties after Rüştü Reçber saved Mladen Petrić's kick following earlier misses from Modrić and Ivan Rakitić. Turkey coach Fatih Terim, though, will struggle to get a team together to play Germany with Emre Aşık, Tuncay Şanlı and Arda Turan all suspended along with Volkan Demirel after being booked here.

Nervy start
Terim, without the banned Volkan Demirel and Mehmet Aurélio and with injuries also taking their toll, made four changes from the side that defeated the Czech Republic dramatically to reach the quarter-finals. The 35-year-old Rüştü, who had played against Croatia coach Slaven Bilić at EURO '96™, started in goal, while Bilić reverted to the team that had beaten Germany en route to topping Group B. With so much at stake, both sets of players made nervy starts. On five minutes Turkey right-back Sabri Sarıoğlu's misplaced pass allowed Rakitić to dart to the byline and he pulled the ball back for Darijo Srna whose shot was blocked by Hakan Balta. It was a portent of things to come as Croatia probed with success down both flanks with Terim's reshuffled back line struggling to cope with their slick passing.

Olić denied
For Turkey, Hamit Altıntop flashed an early effort wide and Robert Kovač bravely blocked his free-kick, but Bilić's men were soon in the ascendancy and should have gone ahead on 18 minutes. Croatia fans had descended on Vienna en masse during a baking hot day and they roared as one when Modrić raced clear on the right. His low centre singled out Ivica Olić who crashed a shot off the crossbar before Niko Kranjčar headed the rebound over. Just as against Austria, Croatia lost their way when it looked like they were ready to take a stranglehold on proceedings. Turkey began to enjoy more of the possession and though chances were few, Mehmet Topal drew a gasp from the crowd with a 30-metre drive that whistled just wide.

Rüştü saves
The traffic was soon flowing back towards Rüştü, with Croatia almost given a goal four minutes after the restart. Gökhan Zan's weak header let Olić in and the veteran goalkeeper had to race off his line to get a finger to the striker's headed attempt. Rüştü saved from Kranjčar moments later and then, on 70 minutes, Rakitić fired over after a neat one-two with Olić had given him a clear sight of goal inside the box. Knowing their side's propensity for late goals Turkey supporters grew in confidence as extra time loomed. But as the clocked ticked down Croatia again came close, Rüştü brilliantly tipping away Srna's curling free-kick on 83 minutes, then blocking from Olić.

Incredible climax
Having taken the match to added time, Turkey started to show more adventure. Stipe Pletikosa did well to parry after Emre Aşık had skipped through the Croatia defence and was then grateful to see Tuncay's drive flash wide on 102 minutes. In an incredible climax, Klasnić would head Croatia in front in the final minute – Modrić capitalising on an error by Rüştü to provide the assist – only for Semih to hit back with the last kick of the game. His deflected strike flew past Pletikosa, leaving it to a shoot-out to finally tilt the balance in Turkey's favour.

Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel has been banned for two matches after being sent off during his side's Group A 3-2 victory over Czech Republic.

Demirel was dismissed in stoppage time of Monday's match after pushing Czech striker Jan Koller to the ground.

The Fenerbahce keeper will definitely miss their quarter-final against Croatia and also a potential semi-final against Germany or Portugal.

The Turkish FA was also fined £27,000 for improper conduct.

The fine related to the behaviour of their supporters, players and officials during the match, notably Demirel who sat on the bench after being sent off rather than leaving the technical area.

"We had some problems with some Turkish fans trying to enter the pitch, and also the presence of about 25 unaccredited people after the game in the Turkish dressing room," UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said.

However, Gaillard added that no action could be taken against Turkey coach Fatih Terim, despite him seeming to come into contact with the fourth official after the Czechs took a 2-0 lead.

"You would need to have something in the referee's report to note that something has occurred, he said.

Die zweite Halbzeit sollte das komplette Gegenteil zur ersten Spielhälfte werden. Die Türkei drückte - doch Tschechien konnte seine Führung auf ein 2:0 ausbauen. Unentwegt stürmten die Terim-Kicker nach vorne, um in der 75. Spielminute endlich den verdienten Anschlusstreffer zu erzielen. Tschechien hatte sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits komplett auf die Defensive konzentriert, alle Spieler hatten sich in die eigene Hälfte zurückgezogen und versuchten, unter dem Druck der Türken nicht zusammenbrechen. Vor allem Hamit Altintop erwies sich als Motor des türkischen Mittelfelds, lieferte scharfe und präzise Flanken und suchte das Duell mit seinem Gegenspieler.
Nach dem Anschlusstreffer sah es lange so aus, als ob die tschechische Abwehr das 2:1 über die Zeit retten könnte. Doch in den letzten Minuten der Partie überschlugen sich die Ereignisse. In der 87. Minute schießt Nihat die Türken zum Ausgleich, zwei Minuten später bricht die tschechische Defensive endgültig auseinander und Nihat erzielt die 3:2-Führung für die Türken. (Übrigens war Hamit Altintop der Vorlagengeber für alle drei Tore.) Drei Minuten später stößt Volkan Demirel Jan Koller zu Boden und sieht die rote Karte. Die Türkei ohne Torwart und ohne Möglichkeit zu wechseln. Es sieht noch einmal so aus, als ob es den Tschechen gelingen könnte, einen Ball über die Linie zu stochern. Fünf Minuten nach Ende der regulären Spielzeit dann der Abpfiff. Die Türkei ist im Viertelfinale, Tschechien konnte nicht ausgleichen. Der Elf vom Bosporus bleibt es erspart, das Elfmeterschießen mit einem Feldspieler im Tor bestreiten zu müssen (das wäre wohl der Höhepunkt der Dramatik dieser Vorrunde geworden).

The main game is about matchups.  Both teams play well collectively, have good technical skill, are tough to break down defensively, have had recent success on the world/Euro stage and strikers who are good but yet to set the tournament alight.  Czech Republic vs Turkey.  Petr Cech vs Volkan Demirel in goal. Tuncay and Nihat vs Koller and Baros (and Coach Brueckner needs to start both of them) up front.  Servet Cetin vs Rozenahl at center back. Turan vs Sionko at attacking midfield.  All key matchups that need to be contested.  We need to see Altintop step up for the Turks - he has too much talent to not have an impact.  This is not going to penalties much as that would be highly entertaining given Demirel's heroics for Fener against Sevilla in the Champions League and Cech's participation in one of the most dramatic penalty shootouts in recent memory in the 2008 Champions League Final.  I predict a Czech Republic victory in a close game.  Even if it goes to penalties, I will pick the Czechs to win.

"I will make about five changes before the match and the standard three (substitutions) during it," said Scolari. I wouldn't be surprised if Switzerland does the same to blood some of the younger players.  So it's tough to call this one with the Swiss probably desperate to win at least one match at home.  That said, I think the Portugese bench players who start will be desperate to impress Scolari, so the intensity will be even higher.  I predict a Portugal win with Nani and Almeida on the scoreboard.

After watching countless hours of football over the past few days and having my scouting jacket on carefully watching ever game in the euros for a possible new signing or two a few players have caught my eye.

Valon Behrami, Podolski, Schweinsteiger, Orlando Engelaar,Volkan Demirel ,Wesley Sneijder, Ibrahim Afellay, David Villa, Gökhan Inler, Eren Derdiyok, Servet Çetin have all impressed me and could all do a job at Arsenal. But 1 player has stood out for me as a possible star of the future and a player ready made for Arsenal and thats Galatasarays 21 yr old Turkish Winger Arda Turan. Ive seen this guy play a few times in the champions league and even before the start of the euros I rated him highly,But after scoring the winning goal for Turkey in the 90th min I'm convinced this guy can be the player we have been looking for since we lost Robert Pires.

Arda is a  2 footed winger who can play on the left or the right with an eye for goal. He is the closest thing to Robert Pires I have seen. The way he cuts in off the flanks and opens the play up is just typical Arsenal style. He can also play just behind the strikers.

Newcastle have been linked with a summer more for £11m rated Arda but from what I have seen his style of play would be perfect for us. Lets hope that Wenger is taking notes...

If Turkey and the Czech Republic draw their final Group A match in Geneva on Sunday, second place and a quarter-final berth will be decided on penalties.

Shoot-out chance
The Czech Republic lost 3-1 to Portugal on Wednesday evening and then Turkey beat Switzerland 2-1 – both after added-time goals. That leaves the Czech Republic and Turkey level on points, goal difference and goals scored, and according to Article 7.08 in the official 2008 UEFA European Championship regulations, in that instance, if the two equal teams are playing in the last game, their match is decided by spot-kicks after 90 minutes should it finish level.

Regulations
Article 7.08 reads: "If two teams which have the same number of points, the same number of goals scored and conceded play their last group match against each other and are still equal at the end of that match, the ranking of the two teams in question will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark, provided no other teams within the group have the same number of points on completion of all group matches." The full regulations can be read by clicking here. Whoever finishes second in Group A will play the winners of Group B in Vienna on 20 June. Portugal, as Group A winners, face the Group B runners-up in Basel the night before.

Precedent
The situation has arisen before in a UEFA final tournament. In the 2002/03 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship in Germany, Italy and Sweden went into their last group game exactly level. A last-gasp Italy goal made the score 3-3, and Sweden won the shoot-out 4-1, though they were to lose to Norway on penalties in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, while Turkey have never been in a major penalty shoot-out, the Czech Republic beat France 6-5 to reach the 1996 UEFA European Championship semi-finals and Czechoslovakia defeated West Germany 5-3 in the 1976 final and France 9-8 in the 1980 third-place match, giving the nation a major tourmament record of three wins out of three with all 20 attempts converted.

Experience
Meanwhile, both likely goalkeepers on Sunday have recent experience of major penalty shoot-outs. Turkey's Volkan Demirel saved three spot-kicks as Fenerbahçe SK defeated Sevilla FC 3-2 on penalties in the UEFA Champions League first knockout round in February. Fenerbahçe then lost to Chelsea FC, who reached the final only to be beaten 6-5 in a penalty competition by Manchester United FC in Moscow, Petr Čech saving from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yakin - you could have ended this game if you had tucked away your second open net opportunity.  Yes, it was a bang bang play, but you got your foot to it, so it should have been in the back of the net.  Game would have been over.  Oh well, at least Switzerland scored.  The result was cruel.  Two minutes into injury time and a deflection on top of that.  Notice how many goals have been scored on a counter attack off of a corner or goalkeeper save deep at the other end.  Maybe teams need to start putting someone deeper on each wing to stop the break.

Players of the game were Erin Derdiyokfor Switzerland and Volkan Demirel (apparently he CAN stop non penalty strikes). 

As an aside - if you are playing for a country, why wouldn't you celebrate a goal scored for that country even if the country you scored against was the country of your birth (Podolski - somewhat understandable if you were born there) or where your parents were born (Yakin)?  It's just weird.  Respect?  I'd rather you run around like you did something great by scoring against my country than what comes off as a bit patronizing or not a worthwhile accomplishment.  Just me.

O time comandado pelo técnico Zico e repleto de brasileiros (e Lugano, um semi-brasileiro) sentiu a pressão da partida. Afinal, estava construindo a história naquele momento. Talvez por isso tenha começado tão mal a partida.

Já o Chelsea entrou em Istambul determinado a vencer, e pressionou. Para a sorte turca, o goleiro Volkan Demirel estava inspirado, fazendo defesas milagrosas. Mas não conseguiu evitar o gol contra de Deivid, desviando cruzamento pela esquerda.

Era nítido que o time tremeu. Alex não estava bem, Lugano e Edu Dracena tinham trabalho com Didier Drogba, J. Cole e cia.

Porém, no segundo tempo, Zico mudou o time. Além das alterações, ainda deu confiança e mudou a postura do time, que voltou pressionando. Até que, em belo lançamento de Marco Aurélio (e eu jurava que tinha sido o Alex), Kazim Kazim empatou. E, logo em seguida, Deivid acertou um golaço e virou o jogo.

Não há como negar que o time turco é o menos tradicional e tido como o 'Patinho Feio' da Liga, o que já é motivo de se torcer. Além disso, com um time repleto de brasileiros e Zico no comando, quem não torce pelo Fenerbaçe?

Enjoy the early end to the European season. You know, kick back, drink a few beers, listen to the idiot commentators on ESPN, while you watch some teams that are better for you (primarily me) play football for fame and glory.
