Researchers at Ohio State University and the University of California, Irvine conducted a telephone study by randomly surveying individuals employed full-time who use computers in an office environment at least five hours per week. They netted 912 respondents, of which 29.8 percent claimed to use IM in the workplace "to keep connected with coworkers and clients." Interestingly, the demographics of the IM users were essentially identical to that of the non-IM users in the study, with a mean age of 43.7 years old and 53.2 percent female. Neither occupation, education, gender, nor age seem to have an impact on whether an individual is an IM user or not. This should throw out a few more generally accepted beliefs that IM users are predominately tech-savvy young men.

The study theorizes that using IM enables individuals to "flag their availability." Doing so can limit when IM interruptions occur. Even if an IM interruption comes when it is not necessarily convenient to the recipient, it is "often socially acceptable" to ignore an incoming message or respond with a terse reply stating that the recipient is too busy at the moment to properly respond. Also, new "patterns of communication" develop around IM:

"IM provides a means of obtaining task relevant information rapidly and with minimal disruption, allowing a worker to ask clarifying questions without the expectation of engaging in a longer conversation. Alternatively, it can be used to participate in a sustained form of low-intensity collaboration... Setting up a line of communication via IM is as easy as making a phone call, and the line can be kept open indefinitely, allowing participants to query one another infrequently on an as-needed basis and with the expectation that a response will be forthcoming at the next convenient opportunity."

The study goes on to show that using IM does not increase the amount of time an individual communicates, in place of using e-mail, telephone, or face-to-face conversations:

"There is no significant difference in the overall levels of work communication between IM users and non-users in terms of either the time spent in communication... or in the amount of information exchanged with colleagues... In other words, workers' communication levels are unrelated to their use of IM, and there is certainly no evidence that IM use increases the overall amount of communication time. This might provide a partial explanation for why IM is not associated with an increase in interruption."

As to why the perception persists that IM disrupts productivity, the study posits that IM users are more likely to use IM for personal communications. Increased non-work related communications could easily be construed as harming productivity. However, the researchers found that personal-based IM communications have the same benefits as work related IM communications in that they can be short and responses can be delayed or even ignored.

Hopefully, employers who view IM communications with suspicion or disdain will see the potential benefits that the communications medium can bring. While many work environments have come to embrace IM communications, it is often viewed as a necessary evil. Perhaps this study will show those employers that this power can be used for good as well.

Today I'd like to pick three things that pleases me in some way.

Books:

Mark Twain said that good friends, good books and sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life. I think he's right. Good books are the ultimate source of pleasure, information, stimulation and imagination. I always feel good after reading something that touches my soul, my inner self. I would have shared my shelf picture... but er... I like privacy and to to be honest it is so stacked with books that it seems like crashing :)

I would nonetheless share the photos of two books that are unforgettable to me due to one reason or the other. The first one is called The making of Asoka. That book will always be important for me since I won it in a draw. Believe me I had never won a single draw before that. If any of you used to read children magazine Taleem-o-Tarbiat you would know that it had a quiz section and those who used to give correct answers would get gift books published by Ferozsons. The problem was that many would give correct answers and then draw would come into play. My best buddy from school, lucky girl, won thrice in a draw. While I would be like, heck! what's wrong with me. As a consolation I would only see my name published in the print.

So when I woke up one fine morning in 2002, I got a mail. I was asked to send my mailing address. I had even forgotten that I had ever participated in that online quiz. I was skeptical but I was proved wrong when within a month I got that big parcel right from UK. Won't forget it. Winning is pleasurable and then winning a book that was about my favorite movie and actors. That feeling is still alive in my memory!

Book number 2 is Still Reading Khan. To understand my passion for books and for SRK it is enough to say that I own this book. Well this is the most expensive book I ever bought. I don't think I'll ever spend that much on any book :P I bought it for 5,000 Rs :? I am not kidding but I think it was worth buying.

Windows Live Messenger/Yahoo Messenger:

Well, I am addicted to both. It connects me with my loved ones. And yes, my messenger buddy list is not something like 50 0r 100 people. It is very limited :)

Cell Phone:

Lastly, cell phone! I like my current cell phone. I am not much into playing music on phone. But I like it for video and still camera and internet connectivity. Whenever I am taking rest I end up fiddling with it. Sending texts, setting alarm (snooze is wicked), writing quick short notes, ringing up my siblings at odd times, checking the time or just to see my way in it's light when the power is out :P

After messenger it is the second best thing.

That is it on my part. Although my list could have been long but I would limit it to three things like my fellow bloggers. I wish I had cute pets to talk about. But I have none! Gosh! I am so boring! :P

Ok, today I'm talking about a topic you probably don't know (yet): aMSN2.

Let's go straight to the point: aMSN2 is the next generation MSN clone. Multiplatform, multifrontend (yeah, I meant multifrontend) and written in Python.

I've been working on the core and on the Qt4 frontend. I wanted to show you a screencast, but somehow something went nuts on my PC and everything I can get is a crappy video full of redrawing bugs. But nevermind, I took some photos :)

Oh, yeah, the Qt4 login window, powered by QSS super powers, copyright by Profox. Already working with all the goodness. But let me show you something more interesting...

aMSN2 is the widget on the left, with my test account logged in. I made some chatting with my real account logged into emesene (on the right) to demonstrate chatting works.

Ok, chatting GUI still sucks, but what matters the most is that aMSN2 can already chat, send/receive typing notifications, send/receive nudges & status updates, and receive custom emoticons (even if they're not correctly handled yet). In short, it's taking shape :)

Please don't forget this is still work in progress, unstable, it might kill random members of your family or pets. And, quoting Kakaroto, every time the "When will it be released?" question get asked, we delay release of a month. So keep quiet!

But, for developers' sake, we have a git repository where we keep the code. It is here: http://github.com/drf/amsn2/tree/master .
If you're interested in helping (we need EFL, GTK, Cocoa [Mac frontend], Qt, and general python developers), just fork the repository, work on some patches, and send a pull request. One of the reason we are using git in this stage it's that it makes external contribution easier. Not to mention the #amsn channel on freenode, our base.

Insomma e' una bella raccolta di buchi 
ma, sinceramente,  penso che sia una cosa voluta.

Non so quanto microsoft sia contenta che la gente sia già in possesso di una versione beta così rivoluzionaria rispetto alla vecchia versione di Messenger, e soprattutto rispetto a tutti gli altri Messengers...

In questa nuova release, dall'asspetto totalmente nuovo possiamo praticamente personalizzare di tutto, intanto lo spazion nel quale scriviamo e' diventato un fumetto, che parte dal nostro avatar, i messaggi scritti e visualizzati sono stati riorganizzati, ed anche la gestione e condivisione delle immagini e' totalmente nuova, come potete vedere dall'immagine anche la finestra principale dei contatti e' stata modificata pesantemente ed ora possiamo avere anche i contatti preferiti così da avere quei contatti con i quali chattiamo piu' spesso sempre in cima alla lista e a portata di click. Sinceramente mi piace, molto, anche se il pacchetto da scaricare e' ciraca 130mb (ma include anche altri programmi che possono non essere installati), alla fine il messenger in se pesa una 20ina di mega, dimensione questa che ormai è diventata routine per qualsiasi programma.

Intanto è già stata rilasciata la APatch per questa beta, così da poter rimuovere le pubblicita' e le inutility ;)

I tried it out for the first time yesterday. Me and a good friend watched a whole episode of South Park and we Lolled many times. I was already imagining how cheap and easy it would be now: not having to take girls out to the cinema, but just sit on our asses in front of the PC screen and watch some Beavis and Butt-head and (k)'ing eachother for the first time 10 minutes later.

But as I wanted to view some videos with someone today. My world fell apart...

I hope they will fix it soon :(

(LiveSide)According to an email sent out tonight to users of MSN Direct Spot watches, which will not support the new Wave 3 version, Windows Live Messenger is set to be released on February 10, “2008” (sic).  The email gives the correct start date for the beta (Sept 17, 2008).  Of course it remains to be seen whether or not the release schedule is met, but this gives us some indication of the timetable for Wave 3 final releases.

Lo único que necesitas hacer es agregarlos con su respectivo dominio de Yahoo!, por ejemplo "lololoco@yahoo.com" y listo! podrás comunicarte con tus amigos cuando lo desees.

Ésta función, sólo está disponible para Windows Live Messenger, por lo que si tienes una versión anterior, te recomiendo descargártelo.

Características de Windows Live Messenger:

   A nova versão vem com várias novidades tanto em funções, como tb na parte gráfica ( que sinceramente ficou bem legal) e tb esta totalmente em português. O único "problema" é o tempo de instalação que é um pouco longo, mas vale a pena.

   Agora, como  já estou usando o novo MSN messenger 2009 Beta, e como todos devem estar curiosos, eu vou mostrar algumas imagens da nova interface do programa.

   Primeiramente a tela de login, nada muito novo nessa parte.

Aki já podemos perceber algumas melhorias gráficas e funcionais.

O grande destaque é um grupo denominado FAVORITOS, onde vc pode colocar seus contatos favoritos.

Mas vc pode dizer: "Isso eu posso criar um grupo e por meus contatos favoritos lá".

É verdade, vc poderia fazer isso, porém ao colocar os contatos nesse grupo vc teria que retirar de outro, coisa que não acontece no MSN 2009, vc add o contato nos favoritos sem perde-lo no grupo atual.

Outra novidade são os status. Diferente das versões anteriores, nessa nova versão os status mudaram, e foram resumidos em apenas 4, não existe mais aquele Volto logo ou Horário de Almoço entre outros.

Agora as janelas de bate-papo, é aki onde ocorreram as maiores mudanças gráficas. Como vcs podem ver na imagem abaixo.

Eu procurei citar algumas das novidades, porém, ainda existem outras como a escolha de um cenário para a janela principal e opção de exibir as fotos na lista de contatos, e outras que vc mesmo vai descobrir.

Instalando: Verifique se o MSN está aberto em seu computador (é necessário abrí-lo e acessar sua conta). No site, escolha a skin desejada e clique em "tranferir" (Importante: na página da skin, verifique se a mesma é compatível com a sua versão do messenger). Selecione "Abrir com MSN Plus!" e dê Ok.

Espere a conclusão do download. Automaticamente, irá abrir a seguinte janela:

Se você quiser aplicar a skin logo após a impotação, deice habilitada a caixa "Activar esta máscara após ser importada".
Clique em Importar. Após alguns segundos você receberá uma mensagem de confirmação de que a skin foi instalada. Pronto! Sua máscara está instalada.

Observações:
• Você pode instalar quantas skins quiser. Para mudá-la, entre no MSN e basta ir no menu "Plus"/ Opções/ Personalizar/ Máscaras.

• Uma vez aplicada uma skin, ela será a máscara de qualquer conta do MSN acessada em seu computador.

1. Högerklicka på bilden/bilderna som du vill förminska och välj Photo Gadget Picture Resize i menyn

2. Välj något av de förinställda alternativen eller ställ in egen storlek under Custom.

Algunas de las novedades de esta nueva version beta, son:

Glassy: Ahora Messenger tendra una aparensia similar a las de los demas programas en vista, de transparencia.

Clean: Se a limpiado el diseno de Messenger para hacerlo menos tedioso, por ejemplo se han removido las pestanas que se encontraban de lado izquierdo, entro otras cosa.

People, People, People: Ahora podremos ver las imagenes de nuestros contactos directamente desde la ventana principal del messenger.

Se anadio una categoria de Favoritos donde se mostraran todos los contactos con los que hablemos con mas frecuencia.

Otra opcion muy interesante es en lugar de solo cambiarle el color a nuestro Messenger, ahora nos da la posiblidad de que facilmente le demos un diseno mas vistoso con nuestras imagenes, lo que nos permite personalisarlo mas.

Se a modificado la ventana de conversacion haciendola mas vistosa y facil de manejar, para que podamos divertirnos personalisando nuestra pantalla de conversacion. se anadio tambien una nueva vista VGA 640x480 para la camara web, que nos permitira compartir video de mayor tamano y poderlo ver a gran tamano, por fino nos olvidamos de la pequena ventanita. jiji

Algo totalmente nuevo es Photo sharing  que nos permitira compartir nuestros albunes de fotos de forma facil y rapida con nuestros contactos de messenger.
