WordPress.org is open source blogging software that is freely available to anyone to download. The software must be downloaded and installed onto a computer. WordPress, being internet software, must be installed on a web server–that’s a computer that is set up to serve web pages over the internet–and your personal computer probably isn’t a web server. So, to make the free WordPress software work, you have to own a web server or rent some space on one. That’s called hosting and it’s not usually free. There are plenty of good hosts out there who will let you install WordPress on their web servers for a reasonable fee. You can then do anything you like with your own copy of WordPress: install plugins and themes, etc.

WordPress.com is different. It’s a web site that provides blogs hosted free of charge. The software on WordPress.com is very similar but not exactly the same software you can download from WordPress.org. It is a multi-user version of WordPress that allows many thousands of blogs to be hosted on a single web server. The free blog hosting does not come with the ability to upload plugins or themes. Because any change in the software affects every blog on the system, some of the things you can do on your own hosted WordPress blog are disabled here. Some of these features may become available in the future as paid upgrades, comparable with traditional hosting fees.

WordPress.org Benefits

Ability to upload themes

Ability to upload plugins

Great community

Complete control to change code if you’re technically minded

WordPress.org Cons

You need a good web host, which generally costs $7-12 a month

Requires more technical knowledge to set up and run

You’re responsible for stopping spam

You have to handle backups

You must upgrade the software manually when a new version comes out

If you get a huge spike in traffic (like Digg or Slashdot) you site will probably go down

WordPress.com Benefits

It’s free and much easier

Everything is taken care of: setup, upgrades, backups, security, etc

Your blog is on dozens of servers, so it’s highly unlikely it will go down due to traffic

Your posts are backed up hourly

You get extra traffic from blogs of the day and tags

You can find like-minded bloggers using tag and friend surfer

Your login is secure (SSL) so no one can get into your account if you use wifi

WordPress.com Cons

Limited customization of themes (though we’re adding more every day)

You can’t hack the code behind your blog

Even though we don’t have our own sports teams (which helps us keep tuition down!), Social Media University Global still needs a nickname for our student body. Referring to the whole bunch as “SMUG students” has an unfortunate connotation, but until a few weeks ago it was the best I could do.

Then, in a comment on this post, Jim Streed suggested "SMUGgles" as the collective shorthand designation. For those who haven’t read the Harry Potter books, it’s a take-off on J.K. Rowling’s name for ordinary mortals, Muggles: those who lack magical powers.

And while "muggles" is sometimes used pejoratively by Harry's peers, SMUGgles is a label we should all wear proudly. It reinforces one of the founding principles of our institution:

You don't have to be a wizard to get magical results with these powerful tools.

Everything you see here is accomplished through free or ridiculously inexpensive services like YouTube, Facebook, Flickr and Wordpress.com, and with no professional IT support. And with SMUG you can work through the learning process step by step, until you feel confident using these tools in your organization.

But having chosen SMUGgle as our "team name," that still left us with one problem. We all can picture a Cardinal, or a Blue Jay, or a Viking, but what does a SMUGgle look like? What could be our school mascot?

For now, we're going with something that bears an eerie resemblance to the "I just joined Facebook" avatar that represents all of us on that social networking platform until we upload a picture. Somehow that seems appropriate, because it shows that SMUG is not only open to newbs, it's intended for beginners.

But with that, I also want to renew the call for those, newb or not, who have artistic abilities and would like to design a new masthead and logo for SMUG. It would be great to have an official seal that incorporates our Latin motto, Suus Non Ut Diffucile, and if we could get an original drawing for the SMUGgle mascot, that would be fantastic, too.

If the Obama campaign can have an official seal complete with a Latin motto, why not SMUG? To borrow a phrase, "Yes, we can!"

I promise that once we select a SMUG seal, we'll use it a lot longer than Obama did.

Well I'm back again with yet 'another' blog which I do intend to use like I did with my wordpress.com one. I couldn't stand using the watered down version of wordpress on there for any longer and ventured out after deisehost.com was advertised over at imanto.com. Check these two sites out, one a great hosting company and the second a blogger with a open mind posting a range of things!

So anyway onto the domain name ideas. To be fair I can't think of any really. Only half decent one I came up with was simpleshaun.com but I'm not sure if that's any good considering I could be mistaken for a retard with the word 'simple' but that might be just me playing with it on my mind.. if you have any ideas please share them or I might just have to go with simpleshaun.com !

Ciao for now.

Developing your “web presence” is paramount to any artist or fine art photographer who hopes to sell their art. Sure you can look toward the traditional galleries but unless you are known by collectors and have a publisher, chances are you are still in the do-it-yourself mode when it comes to selling prints of your work.

There are many resources you can use, some free and some that will require an investment. They will range from allowing you merely post a picture and some text to create a fully functional website with a gallery. If you are like me, you probably will want to check out the free places first so do not discount them. One of them is my own site FinerWorks.com which allows you to setup an online gallery and sell your work as prints but as the title suggests in this blog, you will want to look at using the wonderful world of blogging.

If you are just getting started, a place like Wordpress.com, Live Journal, and Blogger.com are a great place to start. Actually, even though Here is the approach I suggest when using a blogging service:

Signup with one of the blogging sites like Wordpress.com or Blogger.com. I personally like Wordpress a little better since it seems to send traffic (visitors) to my work right away. Without getting into too much detail, both will let you customize the look and offer a number of options so that in a sense you will actually be creating more than a blog but a fully functional website. I must be honest with you at this point. While this is probably the easiest and cost effective option (free) you will need to study your account settings and the options it allows so that you can get the most.

Setup an “About” page on your blog site. List your accomplishments, what inspires you etc. Make it interesting because you are trying to promote yourself and make yourself stand out among thousands of others.

Create a contact page. If you have the ability to setup a contact form on your blog, do so. Post your phone number, mailing address but try to avoid listing your e-mail address unless you want to start getting tons of spam in a matter of days at that e-mail address. If you can’t setup a contact e-mail form post a temporary e-mail address that you can periodically change once the amount of spam becomes unbearable.

Finally start posting your work. For each picture you want to display give it a title, description and what inspired you. Try to make that page devoted to that picture as descriptive and as interesting as possible. Try to avoid writing in abstract terms and make it as to the point at possible.

Num num num. The Oreo, the American cookie that’s basically a bourbon cream squared, has now b

Num num num. The Oreo, the American cookie that's basically a bourbon cream squared, has now been debuted in the UK after it being sold in Sainsbury's for a while, and I've got some, and they're nice. Very very nice. Especially when dunked in coffee, like I'm doing now. Or in milk, like the slogan suggests. Num num num num num.

Of course, this being Britain, where bitching about inconsequential things could be an Olympic event (watch out for it in 2012, it'll probably be sponsored by the Daily Mail) there's been pissing and moaning about them. Like them being "too sweet", or "American". One person, a self-anointed biscuits and tea expert (yeah, while I'm here, I'm now a bacon expert. You can expect me to now give views on bacon, and RESPECT THEM because I'm the bacon expert) has described the slogan's suggestion that you lick the cream out of the biscuit and then dunk it in milk as being like "someone rudely coming into your home and telling you how to arrange your settee". He also said it was disappointingly dark and sickly.

But, on the side of common sense, it's meant to be. Because it's a fucking biscuit with creamy stuff in the middle. It's intended to be sickly. This is another British thing which I'll never understand as long as I live - sweet things being "too sweet", as if the concept of something intended to be sweet not being savoury enough is an affront to good taste. I honestly don't understand these people, and if they'd kindly fuck off and eat Ryvitas while the rest of us enjoy tasty treats I'd be most grateful.

The criticism is stupid, and appears to be founded more upon the whole concept, now for some reason endemic in the UK, of American things being bad - we have custard creams and we're happy with them, thank you. Well, sorry to piss on this particular parade, but while the USA does have some bad traits - amongst them a bizarre opposition to government doing anything at all which could impinge on a business of any kind, a media with no balls whatsoever, a peculiar attitude to civil liberties and a strange acceptance of "campaign contributions" (an activity which in most other free countries is more eloquently known as "corruption") - they do have a few good ideas. Oreos, House, WordPress.com, Facebook, Apple computers, Method cleaning products, Valve software, a Bill of Rights, a large number of nuclear weapons (no, wait, not that last one), Al Franken and a subprime credit crisis which threatens to fuck up the world economy for everyone else (oh, wait, sorry, not that either).

All of those are good ideas. Especially House, which the UK seems to resent more because it's a Brit being successful outside Britain and by pretending to be an American, regardless of the fact that Hugh Laurie gives a fucking excellent performance in it while having, while speaking in a British accent, a tone of voice completely unsuited to the character of a gruff, misanthropic, depressive doctor. (Go and listen to him in Blackadder the Third, and then imagine that voice on Greg House. See how ridiculous that sounds?) Oh, and we resent those nuclear weapons too. What with them being able to end civilization and all.

But where was I? Yes, Oreos. They're nice. And as for Mr Nice-Cup-Of-Tea-And-A-Sit-Down's assertion that the slogan is like "someone rudely coming into your home and telling you how to arrange your settee", I would point out that thousands of people across the country are more than happy to sit and watch some high strung prick or prickette do the same thing to some poor prole on shows like Trinny and Susannah Insult The Nation or Changing Rooms or whatever, so considering a biscuit bad along those lines strikes me as slightly odd. But then, I'm not a biscuit expert, am I?

Comparing the functionality available under Wordpress.com against Google Page Creator (available under Google Apps) – It is an excellent product. However, most business websites are going to require a minimum of flexibility that just isn't available with Wordpress.com.

Before going any further I think it will be useful for many readers to clear up some of the confusion surrounding Wordpress software. The full history is available here but to be extra brief... Wordpress is Blogging software, and available for download, use and manipulation from wordpress.org. Some of the smart people behind Wordpress decided that in order to make things extra easy for people to get up and going with their blogs, a hosted version of their super software should be made available, and so wordpress.com was born.

With Wordpress.com you can be up and going in a matter of minutes, even under your own domain, as I am here at AntGalvin.com.

Blogging software? Amn't I evaluating Wordpress as a CMS (Content Managment System) for a fully fledged small business website. Why sir, yes I am. Wordpress software is very capable of managing small professional looking websites. In fact in recent chats with three successful home-office website desiners, all three use Wordpress software. (For more complicated jobs, Drupal is their preferred option).

So Wordpress.com is a very convenient solution for getting started with Wordpress software. The downside of this convenience is that a lot of the functionality that makes Wordpress software great has had to be curtailed to make it work in this hosted situation. There is a great list of the top 15 limitations and benefits of using Wordpress.com available here - I suggest you read them. The main one in my mind is the limitation on design freedom on Wordpress.com - A problem that evaoprates when you use Wordpress software on an independent host.

I make one other argument against using Wordpress.com for hosting a corporate website. You cannot use Google Analytics on Wordpress.com webpages (See the Wordpress.com faq). "So what?" you say.

If you are own or manage a small business, I am sure you understand the problems of being short on resources, especially time and cash. So if you are going to develop a website for the business, you need to know if its cost-effective. How do you do that? The best way to do this (apart from looking at directly generated sales) is to monitor your website via Google Analytics. This excellent software is free to use and provides any website proprietor with invaluable information on the performance of their website. Its also simple to use.

Please note that Wordpress.com does provide good stats on the visits and behaviour on your site - But it is limited and will become a problem in time for anybody serious about developing their website.

The same is true for the other limitations of Wordpress.com - They may just annoy you at the start, but they will eventually become a major issue. When that happens, you will end up using Wordpress software on your own choice of host.

If you are a small business, save yourself the hassle, Start at wordpress.org and leave wordpress.com to the part time bloggers, like me.
